Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love. Feel free to get creative! If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!
My words this week come from Kinsey and Me by Sue Grafton.
1. ratiocination – “The mystery story, on the other hand, proposes a puzzle with a crime at its center, but doesn’t rely on the ratiocinations of a sleuth to drive the plot towards its conclusions.”
Rationcination means the process of exact thinking: reasoning. There’s probably a reason I didn’t know that word.

2. vagary – “I’d just wrapped up a case and I had a check in my handbag for four thousand bucks, not bad considering the fact that I’m a female private eye, self-employed, and subject to the feast or famine vagaries of any other freelance work.”
Vagary means an erratic, unpredictable, or extravagant manifestation, action or notion.

3. protean – “I do not necessarily maintain that today’s hard-boiled hero/ine is cast of finer mettle, only that s/he is more diverse, more protean, a multifaceted arbiter of our desires in conflict.”
Protean means of or resembling Proteus in having a varied nature or ability to assume different forms.

You stumped me with ratiocination, but I knew the other two. Great words, Kathy!
That first word is a total mouth full of syllables!
Kathy, your ratiocination is superb! Kinsey and me has some good words to ponder.
Like Beth, I knew vagary and protean but ratiocination got me (it did remind me of rationalization though)

I especially like protean.
I had an idea what vagary meant but now the meaning is clearer!
I think RATIOCINATION is fun to say (assuming I’m saying it right? nope, really doesn’t matter, does it?)
All are new to me, but agree that ratiocination is a fun word!
Thanks for sharing! I didn’t know ratiocination. I’ll have to think of a way to use it in a sentence so that I can remember it.
Cool words!! I must expand on my vocabulary!!
Protean is one of my favourite words.
