Wondrous Words Wednesday

July 4, 2012

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

All of my words this week come from my handy Word-a-Day Calendar.  I chose these words because they reminded me of other words.

1. osculate – “”I’ve been osculated by everyone in the building!” Kevin exclaimed, wiping his cheeks to remove the vestiges of kisses planted there on his graduation day.”

Osculate is rather obscure but it means to kiss.

2. paronomasia – “Humorists claim that Harry Truman offered the delightful paronomasia “Missouri loves company” when he invited a friend to join him for dinner.”

It took me a while to get that one, but a paronomasia is a play on words: pun.

3. flapdoodle – “And you ask me to devote a whole day to discussing that sort of flapdoodle with you.” —George Bernard Shaw, Collected Letters

What a fun word!  Flapdoodle means nonsense.

I was way off on what I thought “osculate” meant. Great word. I wonder what Henry would say if I told him that I wanted to osculate him?

Excellent words today, Kathy! This one is from my word-a-day calendar: petard. It means a case containing an explosive (to break down a door or gate); a firework that explodes with a loud report.

Have a safe and happy 4th!
