The Week in Review: 09.01.2017

Between the Covers

Finished last week:

SUEE AND THE SHADOW by Ginger Ly is a fun, fantastical graphic novel for middle grade readers.  After Suee and her dad move to a new town, her shadow comes to life and takes on a personality of its own – becoming more and more demanding.  In the meantime, Suee and her friends notice something’s not quite right with the kids that others refer to as Zeroes – their faces and voices seem vacant and their eyes are hollow.  The three of them form the Zero Detective Club and set out to solve the mystery.  I thought this book was a lot of fun, even though there is a fantasy aspect to it and that’s not a style I gravitate towards.  Molly Park’s illustrations are terrific and add to this story that’s sure to appeal to the target audience of 9 to 12 year olds.  (Review copy provided by Amulet Books.)

WATCH ME DISAPPEAR by Janelle Brown is the story of the Flanagan family.  Billie, the mom, disappeared a year ago while on a hiking trip and is assumed to be dead, leaving behind her daughter Olive and husband Jonathan to try to piece together their lives.  Olive begins to have visions of her mom and becomes convinced she might be alive after all.  Olive and her father search for Billie and discover some unexpected things.  I liked this book a great deal but can’t quite say that I loved it.  I was engrossed at the beginning, thought the middle dragged, was a little disappointed in the big “reveal,” and felt like some issues thrown into the book were a little distracting.  The audio version is read by Tavia Gilbert and Kaleo Griffith and they both do a good job with the material.  (Review copy provided by Penguin Random House.)

Not much of anything.

Off the blog

  • I’ve been at my mom’s this week, enjoying her wonderful company.
  • Carl’s iCloud issues were (mostly) resolved!  There are still a few things to sort out but he’s happy to be able to use his phone and his iPad again.
  • I’m in complete denial that it’s September already and summer is winding down.
  • I averaged 11,000 Fitbit steps a day.

I’m glad you got to spend some time with your mom! Sorry you didn’t like Watch Me Disappear more.

I’m tempted to listen to Watch Me Disappear. So nice to spend time with your mom. Enjoy.

I’m in denial too which is hard to do considering I am already seeing Halloween stuff in the stores!

Happy to hear you and your mother are having a nice visit.

It is VERY hard to believe it is September, and here in Pennsylvania we are having unusually chilly temperatures for this time of year. The past week has had night temperatures in the 50’s. This morning it is 47 degrees.

Fall is too early for me.

Have a good rest of the day and weekend.

For some reason, I never started Grafton. It might be a little too late for me now!

I tried Watch Me Disappear on audio but, for some reason, my free download turned out to be just a teaser and not the full book – maybe I’ll see if the library has that one.

Hope you had a nice summer Kathy.

Your mom is lucky to have your company, and I’m sure the two of you are having wonderful chats.

I have Watch Me Disappear and Y is for Yesterday…both of which I’m eager to start reading.

The Blinds looks tempting, too. Enjoy your week, and thanks for sharing.

How’s The Blinds? That one seemed so out there to me on last month’s BOTM selections, but I’ve been hearing good things about it!

I love that you had such a great time with your mom…does she cook for you or do you go out to dinner?

Kathy, I’m so glad that you are able to spend time with your mom. I am inspired by all of your daily steps! August went by so quickly! Enjoy your weekend.

I haven’t read a Sue Grafton in a few a years and can’t believe she is almost done with the alphabet. I think I last read U.

I’m going to have to look for Suee and the Shadow. That sounds like something I would really like.

I am so behind in the Grafton series. I think the last one I read was T is for Trespass. I really need to catch up.

I am glad you enjoyed your visit with your mom, Kathy. Have a great week!

I don’t want summer to end either! Glad the iCloud problems are almost resolved, good. The Blinds looks like a wild story with violence — I’ll see if you like it. Have a good week.

I totally agree with you about WATCH ME DISAPPEAR, and I’m listening to Y IS FOR YESTERDAY too! I can’t believe you still averaged over 10K steps while visiting your mom!

I want to stay in denial that it’s September already and summer is winding down but back to school and the much cooler weather was a rude awakening! The MG graphic book sounds great. I think my son would have liked it.

My daughter loves graphic novels and especially this kind of “dark themed” ones. She can’t get credit for reading them for school, but since they are quick reads, she still likes to read them. I’ll have to look for this one. And yes….I want my summer back! 😦

I’m glad to hear the good news about Carl’s phone and iPad. I do hope “Y” is good. I’m waiting my turn at the library. Enjoy your time with your mom. That time is so valuable.

I’m so ready for fall 🙂 Summer was busy, busy, busy. Looking forward to a bit of down time. Glad that Carl’s iCloud issues are being fixed (slowly).

You’re doing great with the walking per day. I’m so glad to hear the icloud issues are resolved for the most part. Enjoy your mom’s company and the remaining days we have that are warm. September is here.
