Wondrous Words Wednesday

May 6, 2020

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I found this word in a review of LIGHT CHANGES EVERYTHING by Nancy E. Turner on Rhapsody in Books.

1. aleatory – “Like the author Paulette Jiles, Turner depicts the aleatory nature of existence in the wild areas of the Southwest in the period after the Civil War but before statehood restored some sense of law and order.”

Aleatory means relating to luck and especially to bad luck.

    Hi Kathy,

A new word to me also – and what a lovely one!

I really need to work this one into a conversation – perhaps it is even relevant to the strange times we find ourselves in now, where much of our everyday life both now and in the foreseeable future, will depend on luck!

A really nice book also, definitely one I might consider reading, so thanks for the link.

Take Care and I hope to see you next week to join in the meme 🙂

“Aleatory” meaning just random is more familiar to me, as in aleatory music or art where the creator uses random choices to determine the artistic result. The process could even be from throwing dice — since the word “aleatory” comes from the Latin word for dice. But of course, also just luck.

My Wednesday today is mostly a wordless Wednesday.

I agree with Yvonne – it definitely applies to these days, like whether just going to the grocery store is going to get you killed this time or the next!

A word where context is important to understand the meaning (given the comments!).
