Book Expo 2019 – Day Two
On Thursday, Julie (Booking Mama) and I got up bright and early to head to the Javits Center for a breakfast hosted by DC Comics to introduce their new imprints. DC Zoom will publish graphic novels for Middle Grade readers and DC Ink will feature graphic novels for Young Adult readers. DC has been publishing superhero stories for 80 years so they know what they’re doing. For their graphic novels, they’ve paired well known authors with great artists. All of the books are stand alone and allow pictures to tell the story. It was fascinating to hear the process in creating these books and to see how excited both the authors and the illustrators are about them. I was happy to see so many female characters featured – these are just a few of the books that caught my eye:
- BLACK CANARY: IGNITE by Meg Cabot, Illustrated by Cara McGee; October 29, 2019
- DEAR JUSTICE LEAGUE by Michael Northrop, Illustrated by Gustavo Duarte; August 6, 2019
- HARLEY QUINN, BREAKING GLASS by Mariko Tamaki, Illustrated by Steve Pugh; September 3, 2019
We wandered around the showroom floor for a little while and I picked up several books I’m anxious to read.
- NOTHING TO SEE HERE by Kevin Wilson (Ecco; November 5, 2019) Lillian’s old roommate calls to ask her to be a nanny to her stepchildren but there’s one small problem – the kids burst into flames when they’re agitated.
- MY LIFE AS AN ICE CREAM SANDWICH by Ibi Zoboi (Dutton Children’s Books; August 27, 2019) Ebony-Grace leaves her Huntsville, Alabama home to stay with her father in Harlem for the summer while her mother takes care of some issues at home.
- THE DEARLY BELOVED by Cara Wall (Simon & Schuster; August 13, 2019) is the story of two couples who meet in Greenwich Village in 1963 when the husbands are appointed co-pastors of their church.
We needed a little break from the madness of the show floor so walked over to Haymaker for a break and then came back and explored the booths a little bit more.
The evening’s activities started with a session at Mission Escape Games with St. Martin’s Press and Megan Goldin, the author of THE ESCAPE ROOM (July 30, 2019). It was so much fun!! We escaped the “Hydeout” with just under 9 minutes and 1 clue remaining. We walked across the street to District Social for converstaion, liquid refreshments, and light food.
Our final stop was the Canopy room at Versa for a party celebrating Kensington‘s 45th anniversary. Kensington is an independent, family owned and run publishing house and they sure know how to throw a party. We met some lovely authors and publicists and learned about some upcoming books while enjoying terrific refreshments.

Have I said yes how jealous I am? If not, I’m saying it here. And if so, I reiterate!

What a great time… you sure make every moment in NYC count!
I love BookExpo so much. Thank you for sharing your adventures there with us at home.
It feels nice to read about familiar names in the book world.
What a fun time! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Nothing to See Here. What a premise!
I’m glad you’re having so much fun!
So far I’ve liked everything I’ve read by Kevin Wilson, and I also just got a copy of his new story collection, so we can compare notes.
It sounds like you had a wonderful day 2!
A lovely recap. Sounds so fun. I must go next year!
Sounds like a fun day! Glad you got to attend some events.
Oh my goodness. I never get jealous, but that’s a little of what I’m feeling now. Next year I want to tag along!
I want to see that Harley Quinn book in person. I think the escape room sounds like an awesome way to spend an evening.
Another fantastic recap. We sure fit a lot into that day!
i received The Dearly Beloved in the mail the other day. I love the cover. I have so many books that I received recently though. It may be awhile before I can get to it.
