Wondrous Words Wednesday

April 10, 2019

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I’ve had so much going on, I haven’t read a lot these last few weeks so I had to turn to my Word-a-Day calendar once again.

1. reify – “He describes the phenomenal popularity of Edwin Markham’s proletarian poem . . . which reified labor’s feelings of injustice.” — Neal Gabler, The Washington Post, February 1996

Reify is a verb that means to give definite content and form to something abstract.

2. douceur – “While waiting for Mark’s decision on the contract offer, the CEO of the company sent him two tickets to a Broadway show as a douceur.”

A douceur is a conciliatory gift.

3. zeugma – “The author employs zeugma when she writes, ‘She opened the door and her heart to the child.'”

Zeugma is the use of a word to modify or govern two or more words in such a way that it applies to each in a different sense or makes sense with only one.

Great, new-to-me words this week! I wish I’d ordered a Word-a-Day calendar at the beginning of 2019. My vocabulary would’ve benefited. 🙂

When I first looked at these words, I knew they were from your calendar. There was no way any of them were familiar to me!
