Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love. Feel free to get creative! If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!
My first word is from SMALL FRY by Lisa Brennan-Jobs.
1. villanelle – “That spring, soon after I wrote what I took to be a rather poignant villanelle about my eyebrows and entered it for submission in the college literary magazine, I went to see a free campus therapist, writing my name on a sign-up sheet to reserve an hour.”
A villanelle is a nineteen-line poem with two rhymes throughout, consisting of five tercets and a quatrain, with the first and third lines of the opening tercet recurring alternately at the end of the other tercets and with both repeated at the close of the concluding quatrain.

This word is from DARING TO DRIVE by Manal al-Sharif.
2. axiomatic – “The axiomatic thing about Saudi society is that while there are a seemingly infinite number of rules, it is also possible for people in authority to go outside those rules, and, if not break them, at least bend them quite a bit.”
Axiomatic means self-evident or unquestionable.

What words do you want to celebrate today?
I have heard villanelle, ugh, that poetry class was hard
The first is new to me but I kind of knew the second.
I knew it was a poem, but didn’t know all those rules! I remember learning all those axioms in math classes, so that’s a familiar word.

I knew axiomatic, but the first word stumped me!
Finally I can say I have heard of one of these words…the easy one…axiomatic!
After reading the comments I think I should know the second word, but nope, both are new to me.
Kathy, I knew axiom but not axiomatic. Great words this week!
Both are new to me — no surprise there!
Well I not only did not know villanelle, but did not know anyone would write a poem about eyebrows! LOL
