Merriam-Webster‘s website lets you discover which words were added to the dictionary each year so I decided to see what words were added the year I was born and found some very common words and phrases like bigfoot, empty nester, nonstick, and knee-jerk. I also found a few that have gone out of style like car coat and beatnik. Here are a few I didn’t know.
1. haylage –
Hay + silage were combined to make this word that means a stored forage that is essentially a grass silage wilted to 35 to 50 percent moisture.

2. grievant –
A grievant is someone who submits a grievance for arbitration.

3. concrete poetry – “Douglas Kearney Kearney’s dynamic concrete poetry looks great on paper, but the writer is equally well known for his stage presence.” — Zoie Matthew, Los Angeles Magazine, “Six Los Angeles Poets You Should Be Reading,” 18 Jan. 2018
Concrete poetry is poetry in which the poet’s intent is conveyed by the graphic patterns of letters, words, or symbols rather than by the conventional arrangement of words.

What words were added to the dictionary the year you were born? What words do you want to celebrate today?
Nice words to have in your birth year! I’m intrigued by concrete poetry — have seen it but didn’t know that was the name! My post this week is a new food word.

The words from the year you were born made me smile. I remember my mom wearing a “car coat”.
I haven’t heard the words car coat in about a million years but I think my mom had one!
The birth year word thing is fun!
Kind of got “grievant.”
I knew all these words with the exception of concrete poetry!
I can’t say I knew haylage 😉
I like the words you found in your birth year. I’ll have to check out my own year.
Very interesting words, added in your birth year, especially the term, concrete poetry!
That’s a great website to discover. I’m checking it now!
