The Week in Review: 06.15.2018

June 15, 2018

Between the Covers

Finished last week:

THAT KIND OF MOTHER by Rumaan Alam is the story of Rebecca Stone, a young woman who was overwhelmed by motherhood at first.  She turns to Priscilla, the lactation specialist at the hospital, again and again and finally hires her as her nanny.  Rebecca begins to think of Priscilla as a member of her family so, when Priscilla passes away, she and her husband adopt Priscilla’s baby.  Rebecca is white and Priscilla is black so, through Priscilla and her son, Rebecca learns about what it means to be a family.  I picked this book up at Book Club Speed Dating at Book Expo and I can see why the publicist from Ecco recommended it for book clubs.  This character-driven novel gave me so much to think about – parenting, family, adoption, and race to begin with.  This quiet, contemplative book grabbed me from the beginning and has stuck with me since I finished it.  (Review copy provided by Ecco.)

HI-FIVE ANIMALS by Ross Burach is a cute little board book that will engage youngsters.  It encourages readers to give a high five to different animals throughout the book.  As little ones get older, parents and caregivers can take it a little bit further by talking about colors, the sounds the animals make, or even counting.  The cute, bright, colorful illustrations are sure to keep everyone engaged while they read this fun little book.  (Review copy provided by Scholastic.)

HOW TO APPEAR NORMAL AT SOCIAL EVENTS AND OTHER ESSENTIAL WISDOM by Lord Birthday is a quirky little book of lists like “12 Scary Threats to Neutralize Your Enemies,” “How to Drive a Car,” and “Halloween Costume Ideas.”  It has drawings similar to the one on the cover throughout the book.  At 111 pages, it didn’t take me long to read this book but, I have to admit, the humor was wasted on me.  I just didn’t get it.  I’m sure there’s an audience for this book but I’m not part of it.  (I won this book from Andrews McMeel.)

Not much of anything.

Off the blog

  • Tuesday marked my 10th anniversary of blogging.  When I started this blog, I had no idea I’d be at it 10 years later.  I also had no idea I’d learn so much and meet so many wonderful people because of it.
  • Carl and I managed to sneak off for a little overnight getaway to the beach.
  • I voted in our state’s primary on Tuesday.
  • We walked at least three miles every morning, except the day we drove to the beach, and I averaged just over 16,000 Fitbit steps a day.

What’s going on in your corner of the world?

Your books look good. The only thing I’m watching these days is Monk. I started at season one and am now on season 3. I loved that show and was so sad when they cancelled it.

Good for you going on a weekend getaway to the beach!

I tried That Kind of Mother, but DNF’d it about 40% through. Something was off about the portrayal of motherhood for me.

Yay you on the getaway and for 10 years. That Kind of Mother sounds great.

I want to read That Kind of Mother. Lots of holds on it at my library. It may be a while. Ha! Congrats on your 10 years. Amazing! A bunch of blogs are celebrating that milestone it seems. Fun with an overnight to the beach. And I’m excited that I’m getting my step count higher and higher each day. My goal now is 15,000 per day. As my weight loss has progressed, I notice I get less and less ‘credit’ for my steps (on the Weight Watcher fit point scale anyway). That’s sad and annoying and a good thing too. Just a way to encourage the person to do more gradually.

Congrats on your ten years of blogging. I had my 10th anniversary of blogging in April. I didn’t know what I was doing that whole first year! LOL

I hope you enjoy Bring Me Back.

Those little getaways are the greatest. Enjoy the weekend.

This year is my tenth year of blogging, too. Now I need to come up with a big giveaway to celebrate.

Congratulations on your Tenth. Mine is coming in November. Your blog was one of the first I visited back than. I agree that it’s been a great experience. I’m so glad you and your husband had a chance to get away for a few days. Have a nice week ahead.

Congratulations on 10 years of blogging! It is amazing how quickly the time goes, isn’t it?! I have heard good things about That Kind of Mother so it’s nice to see another good review.

I continue to spend Mon-Thursdays at my mom’s house across state (since my dad passed away in February). My sisters take over on weekends. So I listen to podcasts and audiobooks on the 3.5 hour drives. I think That Kind of Mother sounds perfect for book groups! 10 years is a great milestone. Congratulations!

I read Rumaan Alam’s first novel and thought it was good but not great. I’m interested to see if I like his second book more – it certainly sounds like one I’d like. Congrats on 10 years!

Happy Blogiversary! That’s quite a milestone. Did you ever think you’d be blogging this long? I hit my 12 year mark last February and still can’t believe I’ve been doing it for so many years. I miss a lot of the bloggers who have recently disappeared from the blogisphere. I’m glad you are still here!

  23. June 28, 2018 9:29 am

I still need to review THAT KIND OF MOTHER but I loved it!

Congratulations on ten years of blogging! I thought you had been at this longer than I had because you seemed so cool and organized when I found your blog. Turns out we started our blogs at about the same time, though.
