I once took a course on Jonathan Swift. Each student was to take a particular topic to report to the class. One young woman — very naive — enthusiastically volunteered to research what she thought the instructor had said was the “eschatological” imagery in Swift’s poetry. The actual word he said: “scatological.” Poor girl was scandalized.
