Wondrous Words Wednesday

February 28, 2018

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I’ve found several new to me words in THE FORCE by Don Winslow.

1. conked – “Malone looks at the famous face, the conked silver hair, the placid expression.”

According to Wikipedia, the conk was a hairstyle popular among African-American men from the 1920s to the 1960s that called for a man with naturally “kinky” hair to have it chemically straightened using a relaxer, so that the newly straightened hair could be styled in specific ways.

2. brolic – “Lavelle’s newest man is brolic, has to go six seven, all of it muscle and mean.”

Brolic is a slang term that means buff or chiseled.

3. guap – “Has to be thirty grand here, that’s some serious guap.”

You can tell I’m out of it – guap is slang as well and means a high amount of dollars.

    Sounds like an interesting book!

When I see the word “conked” I immediately think of the Autobiography of Malcolm X, where he viewed it as a part of the forces trying to make him look “white.” The Afro hairstyle made the conked style unfashionable. Interesting that it came up in the contemporary novel you read.
