This week’s word is from SOLO by Kwame Alexander with Mary Rand Hess.
1. shekere – “The shekeres shake.”
A shekere is percussion instrument consisting of a dried gourd with beads woven into a net covering the gourd. Some of them are quite intricate and beautiful.

Your word is intriguing — I wonder what language it comes from! My word for the day is “Quark” which has quite a surprising history. See:

Another new word for me. Thanks, Kathy!
Do you know what culture this comes from? It’s a very cool-looking instrument.
It comes from West Africa. I, too, think it looks cool and imagine it sounds that way as well.
Well that was new 🙂
I’ve seen/used something similar, but the noise makers are on the inside. I’d like to see and hear these used.
I think I want one!
I’ve seen those, but had no idea what they were called.
I’m pretty sure I have seen one before, but didn’t know what the name was.
New to me also! Thanks for the pic!
That’s one of the weirdest words I’ve ever encountered. But I kind of like it because of it’s extreme weirdness!
Never heard of it! But I like that you included a photo!
