The Week in Review: 01.19.2018

January 19, 2018

Between the Covers

Finished last week:

I decided to give TELL ME MORE by Kelly Corrigan a try after seeing how much Sarah loved it and I’m sure glad I did.  I’ve read Corrigan’s other books and enjoyed her voice but her other work didn’t impact me the way this book did.  Corrigan says there are twelve things – like “Yes,” “I Love You,” and “Good Enough” that she needs to learn to say more and explains why with personal stories that are honest, tender, and heartbreaking.  Her stories are a reminder to live life and to be thankful for the simple, everyday things and they made me tear up more than once.  Corrigan reads the audio version herself and does an outstanding job – listening to it was like listening to an old friend.  (Review copy provided by Penguin Random House.)

After seeing Julie‘s and Patty‘s thoughts on BEST DAY EVER by Kaira Rouda, I decided to pick it up and, let me tell you, this book sucked me in from the very beginning.  It’s the story of Paul and Mia, a couple who seem to have it all.  Paul has planned the “best day ever” for the two of them but things don’t go exactly as he planned.  The story is narrated by Paul and readers know right from the start that things aren’t what they seem.  This page turner is full of tension and kept me up reading late into the night.  I’m eager to pick up more of Rouda’s work now.  If you like mysteries and or thrillers, you don’t want to miss this one!  (My friend Julie sent me this book.)

HEY, BABY! A COLLECTION OF PICTURES, POEMS, AND STORIES FROM NATURE’S NURSERY by Stephanie Warren Drimmer is a fabulous book for young animal lovers.  It’s published by National Geographic Kids and is printed on thick, glossy paper and features adorable full-color photographs.  It also features lots of great facts, folk tales, poems, and stories of unlikely friendships.  I loved the photos and the stories and even learned a thing or two.  Did you know adult hedgehogs have as many as 8000 quills?  Jellyfish have no heart, brain, or blood but have lived for 650 million years.  I read HEY, BABY! straight through but it’s a book that would be easy to dip in and out of so it will appeal to reluctant readers as well as avid readers.  Pick this book up for the young animal and science lovers in your life.  (Review copy provided by Media Masters Publicity.)

Off the blog

  • My book club met Tuesday night to discuss THE LAST BALLAD by Wiley Cash.  Everyone enjoyed the book, some more than others.  We all agreed that we loved Ella May Wiggins and rooted for her in her fight for justice.

  • Winter decided it wasn’t done with us yet – we’ve had really cold temperatures and woke up to snow Wednesday morning.  Most of the snow is gone now and today’s expected high is a more temperate 52ºF.
  • We walked at least three miles every morning and I averaged just over 18,000 Fitbit steps a day.

What’s going on in your corner of the world?

I agree BEST DAY EVER was a good one. And now I’m taking your advice and listening to TELL ME MORE! So far, so good!

  2. January 19, 2018 6:48 am

Now I’ll have to read Best Day Ever! I can’t believe how cold it’s been for you this year.

Adding Tell Me More to my audible wish list. Yours is the second rave review read this week. I also enjoyed Best Day Ever (not a genre I read often). It was quite different from another Rouda novel I read a few years ago. I would definitely read more if she sticks with domestic/psychological suspense. The audio was great.

So glad you loved Tell Me More! She’s so funny and relatable. Now that you and Susie (Novel Visits) both loved it, I need to force it on some more people! It needs more attention!

Can’t wait to hear what you think of Pachinko.

The picture of your snow is very nice, but you guys don’t get much snow – right? We are finally coming to an end of our current cold snap. It was 11 degrees at my house earlier in the week. Way, way too cold for Central Texas. LOL

I want to read BEST DAY EVER and have heard good things. I’ll get around to it at some point. Maybe on audio. And I’m going to add TELL ME MORE to my audio list too. I have a few credits to use.

I never heard anything official, but I would guess we got an inch an a half to two inches of snow. It’s mostly gone now.

Nice snow pic, yikes! We are having some of it here too. I hope to get to Pachinko too and look forward to what you think of it.

I just finished Best Day Ever, and it sucked me in, too! I’m so glad I finally read it…it had been lounging on Pippa since October.

Enjoy all of your books…and stay warm!

Corrigan’s book sounds interesting. I am glad you enjoyed it so much. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Pachinko. I would like to read that one. Our weather is up and down as of late. No snow, of course, but it’s making dressing difficult. Layers are key. I hope you have a great weekend, Kathy!

  18. January 19, 2018 3:50 pm

Best Day Ever and Tell Me More are both on my TBR list! They sound great, I’m glad to hear you liked them both so much. Kelly Corrigan has such a friendly writing style, I’ve really loved her previous books.

The Last Ballad sounds so good! Great job with the steps. I’m glad that you enjoyed Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda. She’s a local author.

I love that you walk three miles even in the freeze! Adding Best Day Ever to my list. Looks good.

  21. January 20, 2018 2:33 pm

Looks like I really need to read Best Day Ever. I’m also going to check out The Last Ballad to see if my book club might like it. I love you snow picture, but I’m glad it went away. I lived too long in the midwest to love snow around me. Have a great weekend Kathy.

  22. January 21, 2018 10:28 am

You just sold me on Best Day Ever, I want to get that one now. Also I will check for Hey Baby. It sounds very interesting and I think it’s one I would hang on to for my granddaughter when she’s a little older.
Great stepping! We also walk every morning and occasionally get a high step count.

  23. January 21, 2018 1:47 pm

I’ll definitely be adding Tell Me More to my Audible list. I’ve reviewed a Kaira Rouda book called IN THE MIRROR This is a much different from BEST DAY EVER, but it was still good.

  24. January 21, 2018 7:50 pm

I put Best Day Ever on my list after reading such great reviews!

I’ve been reading so many good reviews on Best Day Ever, including yours. I have this one on my bookshelf and must get to it soon!

  28. January 24, 2018 3:45 pm

Everyone seems to like Best Day Ever. I might have to check it out. I wonder if there is an audio version.

  29. January 27, 2018 9:57 pm

Tell Me More is one of the books I bought with my Amazon gift card and while I can’t wait to read it, I have library books that are demanding my attention right now! I love Kelly Corrigan’s books and am very eager to curl up with her latest, but it may be a few more weeks. I did see/listen to a video clip (probably on YouTube) of her reading a passage and, as always, got very choked up. She has a way with words and always seems to tap into my heart & soul.

Best Day Ever sounds intriguing! Off to add it to my list…

Hope by now you’re enjoying warmer weather. It’s overcast and rainy here. Has been for days, but it’s Oregon. That’s why it’s so green, right?! 🙂
