Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love. Feel free to get creative! If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!
This week’s first word came from GIRLS ON FIRE by Robin Wasserman.
1. simulacra – “The other people were irrelevant to us; that they existed for the pleasure of dismissing them, simulacra of consciousness, walking and talking and pretending at an inner life but hollow inside.”
Simulacra is the plural of simulacrum which means an image or representation of someone or something.

I found this word in and advanced copy of THE BLINDS by Adam Sternbergh.
2. coydog – “It felt good to shoot those coydogs, he can’t lie.”
I was able to figure this out from the context but it’s a word I’d not heard before. A coydog is a canid hybrid resulting from a mating between a coyote and a dog.

One of our customers came in the store and said the word of the day was syzygy so, of course, I had to write it down and look it up.
3. syzygy –
Syzygy means the nearly straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies (such as the sun, moon, and earth during a solar or lunar eclipse) in a gravitational system.

What words do you want to celebrate today?
Coydog…never knew that
Coydog makes sense yet it’s a new one to me.
I didn’t know coyotes and dogs could mate!
That solar eclipse was worthy of a new word. I’m going to show off syzgy to my family.
I knew coydog, and though I’ve never heard of syzygy, just trying to pronounce it correctly makes me laugh!
Almost for #1. No chance for 2 and 3.
Syzygy sounds familiar to me, probably because of the tv shows/documentaries my husband watched.
Syzygy is a unique word and actually one I have heard before.
