Between the Covers

Finished last week:

MY FIRST BOOK OF SOCCER: A ROOK BOOK; MOSTLY EVERY THING EXPLAINED ABOUT THE GAME by Beth Bugler and Mark Bechtel is a great way to introduce early readers to the most popular sport in the world. The book covers the very basics of the game and includes bright, full color photographs of players in action. Each page spread also includes cartoon characters that add a little humor to the book. Readers aged 4 to 7 will enjoy the humor and the illustrations and learn a little along the way. Little ones – especially those who enjoy sports – will love this book. (Review copy provided by Blue Slip Media.)

When I saw  Sarah loved THE STRANGER IN THE WOODS: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE LAST TRUE HERMIT by Michael Finkel, I grabbed an audio copy of it and, to be honest, I was somewhat underwhelmed.  It’s the story of Christopher Knight, a Maine man who lived in isolation for 27 years.  He lived in the woods but stole from people’s cabins in order to survive.  I think his story was interesting but there’s not enough information about him so Finkel writes about other well known hermits as well as what might motivate someone to live that way.  I wanted more about Knight.  I found Mark Bramhall’s narration to be a little too slow and found my mind wandering while I listened – I think I might have enjoyed this book more in print.  I’m in the definite minority, though – THE STRANGER IN THE WOODS is getting great reviews, so give it a try if it interests you.

ANIMAL BITES: ANIMALS ON THE MOVE is another terrific book by Dorothea DePrisco from Animal Planet.  It has gorgeous photos and explores the many ways and whys animals motivate including flying, climbing, and swimming.  It also includes lots of fun facts such as frogs that live on land don’t have webbed feet.  The back of the book includes activities, a glossary, and an index.  Young readers will love this book and are sure to pick it up over and over again.  If you know any young animal lovers, you’ll want to grab a copy of this wonderful book.   (Review copy provided by Blue Slip Media.)

Not much of anything since I missed Dancing with the Stars.

  • I’ve been enjoying these delicious teas from Plum Deluxe.  I love that they’re organic, fair trade, and come in resealable pouches. I don’t know nearly as much about tea as my sister does, so I appreciate the steeping directions too.  There are lots of different flavors, including a Reading Nook Blend!  I loved both of the teas I tried and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite.  If you’re a tea drinker, be sure to check out their monthly subscription service and their commitment to philanthropy.
  • I’m firming up plans for BEA and bought my plane ticket this week.
  • I had some friends over to play Exploding Kittens this week – we enjoyed it, even more so when we added the expansion pack.

  • I started a new jigsaw puzzle but this one’s not as much fun as the last one.
  • I weather still hasn’t settled down.  A cold front came through and it’s cool out today – I guess we should enjoy it since we’ll be broiling soon.
  • I walked three miles every morning and averaged just over 16,400 Fitbit steps a day.

What’s going on in your corner of the world?

Sorry I led you astray on Stranger! Speaking of his narration, I think I listened to it on 1.5 speed.

I’ve been curious about The Stranger in the Woods, and after your thoughts I think I’ll pass. I hope to see you at BE A!

I’m glad you’re going to BEA – love your wrap-up posts. No idea what Exploding Kittens is but sounds like it could be fun 😀

I love those animal planet books – they’re always outstanding!

I’d forgotten about BEA and haven’t signed up, but my husband will be in NYC then. Maybe I’ll join him…

One of my daughters played competitive soccer. And I still need that book.
I will be interested in your take of Hawkins’ new book. I wasn’t a big fan of TGOTT.

Is BEA in NY again? It didn’t take long to get back there…I had hopes that the event was slowly making its way westward…LOL. As much as I would love to see NYC, it isn’t going to happen any time soon. I went to the LA BEA in 2008, my one and only time, and it was before blogging…so it wasn’t the same event as it is now.

I hope you enjoy it…and the book Into the Water, which I just got, too. Thanks for sharing!

My mother ordered me a new jigsaw puzzle for Mother’s Day and it is supposed to arrive today. As a jigsaw lover you should definitely check out Liberty Puzzles. They are expensive and only available online, but you’ll never want to do any other puzzles after you do one. They are wood and each piece is individually shaped (birds, people, flowers, animals, etc). They are works of art.

I’m also reading an MG book with the theme of soccer. I love trying out different teas and that brand appeals to me. I’m very curious about the Reading Nook Blend. Perfect for us tea-drinking book lovers!

Oh, I just noticed your comment on BEA. I’ll be there too! Hopefully, I’ll bump into you. 🙂

Kathy, I’ve never heard of Exploding Kittens–I will need to Goggle it! Have a wonderful weekend.

      Just took a look:
      Holy smokes!
      That looks like fun. 🙂

I also looked up the game, to see how it’s played. Sounds less, um, bloodthirsty than I might have imagined!

You seemed to have had a great week…in spite of the weather…Rashad was amazing this week…as usual! I love the look of that tea but Roxie and Lucy take exception to exploding kittens! Heeheehee!

I wanted to do BEA but NYC just isn’t in the cards. I’m hoping to do ALA though b/c it’s in Chicago and I can drive there. 🙂

I’ve been wondering about the Exploding Kittens game and if our family would like it.

  18. May 6, 2017 12:14 pm

I’m shooting for BEA next year. Did make it to ALA, and that was very interesting. I liked the My First Books, but they are definitely for the younger end of elementrary spectrum.

My daughter and I are snuggled under blankets right now. It’s so chilly in the house. We’re supposed to get rain today. I sure hope so! After going so long without, I cherish every day or night it rains now. How exciting that you are going to BEA!

I hope you have a great week, Kathy!

  20. May 7, 2017 5:23 pm

That’s too bad about Stranger In the Woods, but good news that you’re headed for BEA. I hope you’ll share the highlights here. Your puzzle looks very difficult. Hang in there.

  21. May 7, 2017 10:56 pm

I hope you post a lit from BEA! I’m past thinking I’ll ever get there but I like to live vicariously 🙂

Exploding Kittens? You’ll have to explain that one to me. I am so excited that we’re going to see each other in just a few weeks. The plans are all coming together!

  23. May 8, 2017 2:49 pm

I haven’t gone to BEA in several years now. I hope you enjoy it. Exploding Kittens? What in the world? I must be out of the loop on that one.

I almost requested Stranger in the Woods. Glad I didn’t. Awww a soccer book. we are soccer crazy at home. 🙂 My kids would have loved that one when they were younger.
You are going to BEA! I’m so jealous. Post a lot about it 🙂
