Wondrous Words Wednesday

May 3, 2017

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

Here are some more of the words I found in GEORGIA by Dawn Tripp.

1. cogency – “I feel a cogency in these pieces — a common language that binds the body of the work.”

Cogency means the quality of being clear, logical, and convincing; lucidity.

2. evanescent – “A low horizon of tree or hills and then the sky above, clouds rushing, those fugitive evanescent forms he’s somehow managed to grasp.”

I thought I knew what evanescent meant but I wasn’t confident enough to ever use it so I decided to look it up – it turns out I was close but not quite right.  Evanescent means soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing.

3. solander box – “‘As they are, they will not fit in the museum’s solander boxes.”‘

A solander box is a protective box made in the form of a book, for holding such items as botanical specimens, maps, and color plates.  I’ve seen these but never knew they had a specific name.

You would think those solander boxes would have clear covers so you could see what it inside, although I suppose that would allow for light damage.

I knew #1. #2 I’ve heard but was a bit off on what i thought it meant. #3 was entirely new to me.

I like the solander boxes, I never heard of them or the other words.

I wonder if the box is named after the person who made the first one.

My choir just sang a song with the word evanescent in it and it doesn’t mean what I thought it did! I think I had it mixed up with effervescent.
