At the Movies: Florence Foster Jenkins
Florence Foster Jenkins is the story of an heiress in New York City in the early part of the twentieth century who was a true patron of the arts. She formed the Verdi club and did much to encourage music. She loved performing and arranged many private and public concerts but there was one small problem – she couldn’t sing.
Based on a true story, I thought this movie starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant was terrific! Jenkins had a love for music and a flair for life. Her husband, St. Clair Bayfield, supported and encouraged her and did everything he could to make her life happy. Streep did a wonderful job playing Jenkins – you couldn’t help but like her, even while you disliked her singing. Grant was great as her kind and caring husband as well.
This movie is well suited for pre-teens on up so it’s one you can see with your family. There was a good crowd in the theater when I saw it and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
I love Hugh Grant Movies!
I haven’t seen it, but I have trouble getting my head around those two actors as spouses. He seems so much younger to me.
Wanted to see this over the weekend but, it just didn’t happen. Glad u liked it.
Like Rhapsodyinbooks, I have a hard imagining Streep and Grant playing spouses but I’d probably watch when it goes to streaming sites. I’m glad you liked it!
I’ve loved all the movies Streep had made and after watching the video I think this will be really good too. Love that Simon Helberg is in it!
I liked it, too. 3/4. Loved the acting.
I’ve been curious about this one. Glad to see you enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I reallllllllllly want to see this. So glad you liked it.
I can’t wait to see this movie…. everybody seems to love it!!
I enjoyed the combination of Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant…an unlikely pairing, I thought, but it worked.
She is fabulous, of course, and so was he. How she could sing so badly in the movie, when she actually has a good voice, is a testament to her skills. I was riveted throughout.
Great cast!! I can’t wait to see it!!
Yup, like everyone else, I just can’t imagine these two together, so I will have to watch it to believe it! But I love both the actors so this is a movie I would like to watch just to see the two.
I agree about the pairing seeming odd, but it does sound like a great movie!
Dvd, most definitely
I’d love to see this movie. Terrific review, Kathy!
I love Simon on Big Bang Theory and look forward to see how he did in this movie.
I’m glad you shared your opinion on this movie. I’ve been seeing the previews on TV but wasn’t sure I could handle Streep in a bad singing voice. Now I want to see it.
This sounds like a wonderful movie. It sounds like a comedy. Is it a comedy? or the bitter-sweet type?
I’ve seen the previews for this one and am curious about it. I am glad you enjoyed it.
So funny! I just saw this one on Tuesday! I was fascinated by her story and came home and began researching her.
I liked the trailer and I’m so glad to hear the movie lives up to it!
Oh, YAY! I was hoping this movie would be as delightful as it looked!
I can’t wait to see this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the video clip. I’m glad you loved it.
This is the kind of movie that doesn’t show anywhere near where I live, and I usually have to wait for it on video. I got to see this with my daughter in August, though, when we were in Chapel Hill, NC. Both of us laughed and cried. I think you’re right that this is for any age, although the theater we went to was full of older ladies. (Older than me, even!)
