Review: The Couple Next Door

August 30, 2016

The Couple Next Door

When Anne and Marco leave their baby at home alone to attend a dinner party next door, they figure everything will be fine. The two houses are attached so they’re not that far away plus they’ve brought the baby monitor with them. The couple take turns running home to check on the baby and when they return home together at the end of the evening, they encounter a parent’s worst nightmare – the front door is ajar and their baby is missing.

No one is totally innocent so everyone’s a suspect in The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena. The book started out with a bang for me. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and just had to know what was going on. It seemed everyone had some dirty secret they didn’t want revealed. There was plenty of tension and twists to keep me invested in the story the whole time but the ending felt a little complicated and rushed to me. The book was a quick read and, overall, it was satisfying for me. I liked it a lot but wouldn’t say I loved it.  I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more from this author.

Saw a movie like this once and it was good, so I’m thinking I’d like the book.

This is getting a lot of attention, but I’m on the fence about reading it myself.

It sounds interesting but I hate when the ending is rubbish it throws out the whole book! 😦

Sounds good but I’ll temper my expectations 🙂

A scary premise, to be sure. It’s disappointing when an ending doesn’t match the rest of the book. That happened to me with The Firm by John Grisham. I was so disappointed by the last 30 pages that I stopped reading his novels.

The novel Grisham wrote has a bad ending–but the movie they made of it with Tom Cruise has a better ending! One of the few movies I like better than the book.

I want to read this one too, sounds intense. I would say many of my reads this year, the ending felt off, either rushed or just not executed the same as the beginning, hmmm.

    What a nightmare

I just grabbed this audiobook from the library so I was excited to see your review! Glad you liked it for the most part 🙂

Since you didn’t love it and others here chime in about the ending, I think I’ll stay away from this particular bit of nightmare fuel…even though my “baby” is now 20 years old and 6’4″!

I read this one last week and shared a lot of your thoughts! It started strong but I felt the ending didn’t need to add any more twists/revelations. It was a quick read though. Glad to hear you enjoyed it too!
