I found several words in Moonlight Over Paris by Jennifer Robson.
1. japanned – “Her breakfast of buttered toast and chocolat chaud sat on a japanned tray at her side, and Hamish, snoring loudly, was sprawled across the bed’s embroidered silk coverlet.”
Japanning is a type of finish, usually a heavy black lacquer, almost like enamel paint.

2. tisane – “‘Are you enjoying your tisane, Miss Parr?””
Tisane is a beverage, much like tea, made by infusing herbs.

3. tumbrel – “She’d rather be paraded through the streets on a tumbrel.”
A tumbrel is an open cart that tilted backward to empty out its load, in particular one used to convey condemned prisoners to the guillotine during the French Revolution.

“Tisane” is a favorite word — so dramatic sounding!
Wow, all new to me. Does Japanning have anything to do with Japan? Curious about the etymology of this word. Thanks for sharing!
Three good ones this week, Kathy. All new to me. Tisane interests me as I love tea and some herbs, but never an herbal tea. Mmm. Will have to check.
All new to me too.
I think I’ve heard ‘japanned’ before, but didn’t know what it meant. I’ve never heard of a tumbrel, but I’m pretty sure I’d never want to be in one!
Very interesting words this week!
I guessed correctly with japanned but no luck with the others.
I knew japanned but not the others.
I have only read the 2nd one
