Favorite Books of 2015 – Children’s Edition
January 2, 2016
At the end of the year, it’s always fun to reflect on your reading. I read less books last year and didn’t love quite as many of them. I’m not sure if that means I’m not choosing my books as well or if it’s a reflection of how busy I was. Either way, of the books I read this year, there are quite a few that stand out to me. (Please note, these books weren’t necessarily published in 2015.) I featured the adult books yesterday and am featuring the children’s books today.
- I
DON’TLIKE SNAKES by Nicola Davies didn’t make me have a sudden love of snakes but it did help me understand and appreciate them more. It presented lots of interesting facts in a fun way. - MESMERIZED by Mara Rockliff is a beautiful book that tells the story of Benjamin Franklin using the scientific method to prove Dr. Mesmer was a fraud.
- SUNNY SIDE UP by Jennifer Holm is a great graphic novel about family and friendship. It’s fun and funny but has a serious message.
- BROWN GIRL DREAMING by Jacqueline Woodson is an incredibly moving memoir written in verse. This book deserves every award it’s won.
- COUNTING LIONS by Katie Cotton is a gorgeous picture book that combines numbers with endangered animals.
- EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING by Nicola Yoon is the story of a girl in a bubble who is happy with her life until a certain boy comes into it. I fell in love with the story and the characters.

I still need to read Everything Everything — it’s on so many people’s list of favorites. Maybe I’ll get to it this month. 🙂
Can’t believe I haven’t read the Woodson yet!
I’ve seen Everything Everything around but didn’t know much about it. I’ll look for it.
I really want to read Brown Girl Dreaming.
Sounds such a fun list.
I loved BGD too. If only I had time to read Everything Everything, I have a feeling I’d love it too.
I’m looking forward to reading EVERYTHING EVERYTHING this year. Have heard such good things about it.
I feel so out of the book loop. I don’t even know what the great titles of 2015 were so it is nice to see posts like this where I can see what I missed.
On occasion I will read a middle-grade or YA, but don’t have much motivation or cause to read children’s books (at least until my son’s picture book comes out in June!). But I think it’s very cool that you read these as well as well as the usual stuff.
I want to get two books on this list to read with my son: Brown Girl Dreaming and Everything Everything. Thanks for reminding me of the great kids’ books out there!
I really want to read Brown Girl Dreaming and Everything Everything. So many people’s best of 2015 lists have included Everything Everything!
Happy to see Everything Everything made the cut. Brown Girl Dreaming is a fave of mine too. Must investigate the other titles on your list!
I always love your children’s choices!
I did love many, but sadly not as many as before for me either
Brown Girl Dreaming sounds good, I will have to look at the age, starting to think what I can read with my daughter for both of us. I am going to start with Secret Garden. I think I am going to read Everything Everything this year also.
I am curious about Everything Everything. Thanks for sharing, and enjoy your New Year books.
I have Brown Girl Dreaming and Everything Everything on my list.
I want to check out Mesmerized and Sunny Side Up. I love posts that recommend titles. I have one coming up myself that will be devoted to YA books. Keep a look out!
I am really interested in reading BROWN GIRL DREAMING and EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING. Both sound so good!
A great list Kathy. I’m sorry I’ve only read one of these books. I going to take your list to the library. I did thoroughly enjoy Brown Girl Dreaming. It was one of my top ten books of 2015 too.
I’m using this list to get books for KitKat from the library! See that more grown-up nickname…she’s nearly 5 now. I cannot be calling her wiggles.
Everything, Everything looks great!
Oh I want to read Everything Everything. Sounds terrific. Ive been on the hold list at the library for quite a long while now!
Oh I’ve been wanting to read Brown Girl Dreaming and Everything Everything. I’m adding Counting Lions though – looks like just the kind of picture book to have on hand for little ones!
Gage and I both loved I Don’t Like Snakes! He went through a short snakes phase, but they always end when he realize he loves trains more 🙂
Thanks for sharing on Kid Konnection!
