Review: Counting Lions
Counting Lions by Katie Cotton is a gorgeous picture book that combines counting with endangered animals. This is a large book – it measures approximately 11 inches by 14 inches – so it’s perfect for sharing with little ones. Each page spread features a large illustration of animals as well as a paragraph about them. Stephen Walton illustrated this book and his drawings are beautiful and lifelike – they almost look like photographs. There are more details on each of the animals as well as their protection status in the back of the book.
I absolutely loved Counting Lions. Young children will love the illustrations and enjoy counting the animals as well as learning their names. They can grow with this book, too, and learn about protection status and why some of these animals are endangered. Animal lovers will adore this book and it would make a wonderful addition to any library.
Check out this time-lapse video of Walton working on the book’s cover:

The drawings look gorgeous!
Beautiful!
Wow to the art. That is the kind of stunning detail I really admire but never can achieve myself! I had to do a few photorealistic graphite pieces in art school and quickly learned I just don’t have the patience for that kind of detail work.
A great way to teach kids their numbers.
It really does look beautiful!
