All of this week’s words came from and uncorrected proof of Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave.
1. thief – “Then he took out his thief to a loud cheer.”
I was certain the character didn’t have a robber in his pocket so I looked this word up and found that a wine thief is a pipette used to remove a small amount of wine from a cask to taste or test it.

2. trope – “This was a trope of Jen’s – Henry’s brilliance.”
I felt like I should know the definition of this word, but I didn’t. Trope has several meanings, including figure of speech. In this case, I think Dave meant a common or overused theme or device.

3. enjoin – “Thank you for trying to enjoin me.”
This is another word that seemed familiar but I wasn’t sure of the definition. Enjoin means to direct or impose by authoritative order or with urgent admonition.

These are interesting. I thought I knew “enjoin” also, but not with this definition. I recently learned “trope” with the meaning of a sort of cliche storyline.
It’s much more colorful to call it a thief, rather than a plain old pipette 😉
Kind of knew trope and enjoin – but not really. Definitely never heard that definition of thief.
I like the alternative definition of thief, it seems so appropriate. LOL
This meaning for thief is excellent. Thank you for these words today, Kathy! I hope to post a WWW again one of these days (I had a review and giveaway to post today).
I kinda knew enjoin but am glad you looked it up for us. As I’m reading a fair amount of writing advice these days, I’ve been warned many times not to fall into cliched story “tropes”. Thanks for sharing.
I’m not sure I’d thank someone for enjoining me, as the speaker in the book did.
An interesting list of new words today. They all look familiar, but have completely different meanings. Good for you for spotting them.
I would have thought the same thing about thief! All the words sound familiar to me, but the meanings weren’t.
Huh, now I know
I love ordinary words with new meanings!
Interesting. I knew all the words but not in the meaning the author had intended!
Just read about a thief today!
