Wondrous Words Wednesday

May 13, 2015

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I found three more words in my advance reader’s edition of The Mapmaker’s Children by Sarah McCoy.

1. asthenia – “’I don’t want you getting the wicked asthenia.’”

Asthenia is a lack or loss of strength: debility.

2. brume – “A ghoulish brume.”

Brume means mist or fog.

3. guimpe – “Freddy sat with the reins in hand as she climbed in, the white guimpe hung around her neck like a flag of surrender.”

In this case, guimpe means a wide cloth used by some nuns to cover the neck and shoulders.

What words do you want to celebrate today?

These are some doozies! I have this book in my TBR. I am really enjoying this meme, Kathy! It makes me bother to look something up that I would have skipped over.

    Hi Kathy,

I am really tempted to add this book to my ‘Want To Read’ list, however I just know that it is going to be an age before I ever get around to actually reading it … It sounds so good!

The only one of your words I am unfamiliar with this week, is ‘asthenia’, however after the day I have just endured, I may soon be able to quote it firsthand in conversation!

Thanks for hosting WWW and for sharing such great words 🙂

I feel very foolish this week – all new to me. Is this a historical book?

Looks like this book is a good source for new words. I like asthenia. Its a fancy word for what a lot of people my age have.

I knew the word guimpe, probably from attending a parochial school.Congrats on the 300 posts.

Do you ever wonder if the authors just know these words or look up synonyms to make their writing prettier? LOL!
