Review: What I Know For Sure

April 21, 2015

What I Know For Sure

Not many things leave Oprah Winfrey speechless but Gene Siskel did in 1998 when he asked her what she knew for sure.  His question really made her think and inspired her to write a monthly column in O Magazine about what she does know for sure.  Those columns have been combined to create the book What I Know For Sure.

I found this book to be inspiring and uplifting. I’ve only seen Oprah’s TV show a time or two so I’ve never understood her huge fan base until I listened to this book and learned about her life confirming philosophy.  She shares stories from her own life and emphasizes positives like gratitude, joy, friendship, and appreciation, all with the goal of living your best life.  Most of her ideas aren’t original but her emphasis on the positive was heartening and thought provoking.  If you’re a reader of O Magazine, these columns may feel familiar to you but they have such a great message they’re worth reading over and over again.  This is a book to keep and pick up when you need some inspiration.

The audio version of What I Know For Sure is narrated by Oprah Winfrey and, as you would expect, she does a fabulous job.  Listening to the audio felt like listening to an old friend.

My friend Julie sent me this book. I am an Indiebound Affiliate.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever watched her show, except maybe a snippet here and there. I wasn’t planning on listening or reading this, but I’ll keep it in mind if I need a dose of positivity.

This might be one I could actually listen to….even though I am not a fan of audio, hearing the author’s voice, especially someone like Oprah, might make it worthwhile. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve liked her show whenever I’ve seen it, but I never went out of my way to watch daytime tv! But I like her and I like her magazine.

I’ve always liked Oprah and I bet this would be a great listen. I may just see if the library has it.

Not an Oprah fan at all, but glad you enjoyed this.

I used to be a fan of Oprah’s until she threw the fit about her dogs not being allowed into one of the hotels she was staying at. I love dogs but they had a clear policy and on air she pulled the “do you know who I am?” and bashed the hotel to pieces. It was the Four Seasons and from that day on, I lost respect for her.

I’m a huge fan of Oprah and loved her show. I subscribe to her magazine and LOVE it. This book is one of my favorites. I picked it up last year and have highlighted and jotted down notes in it. Its definitely a great book to look to when you need some inspiration. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

I think I liked Oprah best when she was younger, and her show first became syndicated. Over the years I didn’t watch consistently, but I know she is smart and has a positive outlook on life. I do feel like she’s now become a bit too big for herself, money does odd things to people. I’ll remember how well you liked this when I come across fans of hers and suggest the book or audio.

This sounds wonderful, Kathy, inspirational and positive. I’m sure I’d also enjoy listening to Oprah’s memoir. Thanks for a terrific review!

I used to watch Oprah back in the day when I was home with babies and was looking for a non-kid show to watch. I stopped watching her after a few years, but I have read her magazine in doctors’ offices and I enjoy it. I understand that she has a big ego, but she does do good things with her money, so I can’t knock her. I love to read inspirational books. I’m sure she didn’t reinvent the wheel with this one, but it looks enjoyable.

Sounds like an inspiring read. And off topic, but I miss Siskel & Ebert!

I loved listening to Oprah for this audiobook. Sometimes she can come off grandiose, but other times I really appreciate learning from her experiences. She’s been all over the world and talked to some very colorful people!

I’ve never been much of an Oprah fan but I’m curious to read what she says. I think I’ll take a peek at this the next time I go to a bookstore.

I read her magazine for years so I am sure a lot of these will be familiar to me, but it would still be nice to hear them in Oprah’s voice. I really do admire her.

This sounds like a good one to listen to on audio. I didn’t watch Oprah’s show regularly when it was one, but I watched it often enough. I’ve enjoyed some of her book club picks.
