Wondrous Words Wednesday

April 1, 2015

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I was at my mom’s last week so I didn’t get much reading done and had to rely on my Word-a-Day calendar for new words.

1. inselberg– “My favorite photograph in the collection is a breathtaking shot of a mountain lion standing on top of an inselberg.”

An inselberg is an isolated mountain.

2. kanban – “’To stay competitive,’ Rob said, ‘we need to reduce our manufacturing costs by switching to a kanban system.’”

Kanban is a manufacturing strategy wherein parts are produced or delivered only as needed: just in time.

3. precatory – “Mr. Tyler’s will included a precatory provision that his grand piano be restored and donated to a music school.’”

Precatory is an adjective that means expressing a wish.

I knew inselberg from helping my 5th grader study for a spelling bee! It’s a word of German origin, I think. He liked to remember the “berg” spelling (as opposed to burg) because it’s like iceberg. (a mountain of ice) Thanks for sharing.
