At the movies: Chef
I’d wanted to see Chef when it was in theaters but never made it. We noticed it on Netflix a few weeks ago and decided to watch it. Chef Carl Casper wants to be more creative when a food critic comes to the restaurant where he works but his boss insists he stick with the basic menu. When the critic trashes his efforts, Carl tweets his displeasure and the battle lines are drawn. The critic returns to the restaurant and Carl loses his cool and his job.
With the help of his ex-wife, Carl buys an old food truck and he, his son, and a good friend transform it, helping Carl get his passion back and reconnect with his son.
Chef is a feel-good movie and we all liked it quite a bit but I don’t think any of us loved it. The story is cute and the acting is fine but the movie dragged in a few places for me. The cooking/food scenes were just wonderful though. This movie is well worth watching at home.
I will be linking this up to Weekend Cooking which is hosted by Beth Fish Reads and is open to anyone who has any kind of food-related post to share: Book (novel, nonfiction) reviews, cookbook reviews, movie reviews, recipes, random thoughts, gadgets, fabulous quotations, photographs. If your post is even vaguely foodie, feel free to grab the button and link up anytime over the weekend.
I’ll add it to our queue!
I love foodie shows and movies. I didn’t know this was on Netflix – I’m going to add it to my queue.
My sister-in-law and I saw Chef at the theater and loved it.
I agree with your review 100%. Liked it. Loved the cooking scenes. Thought the story dragged. In fact, I have to shamefacedly admit that I didn’t even realize at the end that he was getting married! Maybe I feel asleep!?
A lovely, pleasant-filled movie that sees Favreau back in his old-form. Good review.
I’ll have to watch this one. I don’t think it’s on the canadian Netflix yet though. I love anything with Robert Downey Jr. Lol.
I’d probably enjoy the cooking scenes but I’m pretty sure my husband would fall asleep!
Chef sounds good, Kathy! I will keep this in mind.
I thought it was really sweet and funny. It made me really hungry and I wouldn’t mind owning the soundtrack.
I think I would love it just for the cooking stuff!
OO, this is on Netflix! I will have to watch it.
I will have to watch this one. I like foody books/movies
I haven’t checked out Netflix lately, but I’ve wanted to see Chef. Thanks for reminding me, I’m going to add it to my list.
Hi Kathy,
Hubbie generally chooses the films we watch or go to the cinema to see. By default, they are therefore generally action fims, with ‘feel good’ films usually taking very much a back seat. The only exception will probably be ‘Still Alice’, when it is released here in the UK in March. For some reason this one appeals to him, although it is going to be a real tear – jerker if we go to the cinema to watch it!
This is a perfect entry for the ‘Weekend Cooking’ meme, which I haven’t signed into for some time now. None of my books have featured anything food related recently, so I shall have to see if I can’t find a good recipe or two, so that I can link up with everyone.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend,
Yvonne
YES! I totally agree. A nice movie, not great, but who wants to take the risk! WATCH it.
My mom and I saw it at the theater and both thought it was a fun movie. Perfect for when you don’t want to think too hard!
This sounds like a fun movie to watch! I love food movies – I’ll have to check to see if it’s available on Netflix here in Canada.
This sounds cute! I’d been curious about it when it was in theaters. Added to the queue!
I was so happy to see this on Netflix — I’ll be watching soon too. I missed this in the theaters.
Just added this to my Netflix queue!
I don’t know anything about this one except that Scott watched it without me (in flight) and enjoyed it…so I’ll have to find the time to watch it alone. Sigh!
I’m adding this to my list. I love foodie movies and the trailer hooked me.
I remember wanting to see this one. I’ll have to see if it’s on LoveFilm.
I remember when this came out, though I haven’t seen it. Add it to the list of movies I haven’t seen in the past 4 years (since my son was born)!!
I loved it! I might even have to buy the dvd for a second viewing. I love foodie movies. 🙂
Good to know. I’d seen it but did not have a strong desire to watch it.
Adding it to my queue!
We really liked this one, too!
LOL, that clip was fun. I remember wanting to see it when it briefly hit theaters too. Off to see of the library has it 🙂
I think perhaps if you’re a ‘foodie’ then you might love it. I will let you know tho, because in a few months I have to watch it and make something inspired by it for the Food n Flix challenge. The clip looked cute.
I’m in the mood for a sweet movie. Maybe we’ll give this one a try.
This looks so good. Somehow I missed it when it was in the theater. I’ll look for this one.
I realllly liked this one. I keep recommending it to folks. Especially foodies like me.
