Wondrous Words Wednesday

February 25, 2015

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I’ve found a couple of words in my latest book club read, The Miracles of Prato by Laurie Albanese and Laura Morowitz.

1. sinopia – “Lucrezia looked at the lively figures indicated in sinopia, and marveled at the lifelike quality of their gestures, the careful proportion of their bodies.”

Sinopia is a dark reddish-brown pigment.

2. predella – “Clasping his hands, Prior General Saviano lifted his eyes to the predella beneath the altarpiece.”

A predella is the platform or step on which an altar stands.

What words do you want to celebrate today?

For some bizarre reason, I always feel better when I have never heard the word. Then it doesn’t feel like my memory is shot! Never heard either of these (at least I don’t think so).

Both of your words are new to me, Kathy. Sinopia makes me think of sepia, maybe that will help me remember it.

The way sinopia is used in the sentence made it seem as if I should know the word, but its completely foreign to me. And – the way its used made me imagine any number of objects. Good find, Kathy.

Did your authors swallow a dictionary? Most unusual words, new to me.

Those definitely seem more like “word of the day” words than words in a book!

Beautiful sounding words today, Kathy, both new to me. 🙂

    Those are new to me

I was clueless on both of these!

Never heard of either word before! I Often come across words that are new to me, and have no one to share them with. This is a great idea for a meme.
