Wondrous Words Wednesday

February 18, 2015

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

This week’s first word came from a caption in The Fashion Book by DK Publishing.

1. winkle-pickers– “Pointy-toe stilettos (called winkle-pickers)”

According to Wikipedia, winklepickers are shoes or boots with a very long and sharp pointed toe.

My second word comes from I Never Promised you a Goodie Bag by Jennifer Gilbert.

2. trance – “They wanted Top 40, while the DJ, a snotty-looking kid with slicked-back hair, was playing nothing but trance.”

I know what a trance is but have never heard the word used to refer to music.  Trance is electronic dance music that developed in Germany in the 1990s.  I suspect I’m too old to appreciate it.

What words do you want to celebrate today?

We didn’t know what winkles were, living in the middle of the country, so we called those ‘pickle stabbers’. I suspect I’m too old to appreciate trance music too. Great words!

I would define winkle pickers as “boon to podiatrists.”

Winkle-pickers is a funny word for a funny shoe. I never quite get why there are shoes that aren’t shaped, roughly, like feet.

    0 for 2.

    Winkle pickers? LOL

winkle-pickers have never been a style I liked. I have never been a fan of the pointy toe even though I know they are still quite popular. I dont like cowboy boots either (pointy toe). I am glad now to know what they are called though! 🙂

My definition of winkle-picker stilettos would be ‘torture.’
I was in grad school with a German exchange student who listened to trance – the rest of us generally called it “ugh, that stuff again”

Trance, as music, is new to me too. From the video, I can see why its called that.

    Winkle-pickers makes me smile.

I’ve heard of trance music, but not a fan.

Winkle-pickers is such a great, funny word! I didn’t know trance is also electronic dance music. Thank you for these new words, Kathy! I wish I could play along this week.

Oh yes, winkle pickers were all the rage some many years ago. Yes, I have heard of trance music. Great words.

I am too focused on the shoes! I love them!

Two new ones for me today.

I sure know trance…not my thing

  15. February 19, 2015 1:16 am

Hey! I knew one of the words! That rarely happens. I knew trance music. Winkle-Pickers, however, is much more fun to say.

I am SO going to use winkle-pickers one day!
