Wondrous Words Wednesday

February 11, 2015

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I found two new words in Fire Shut Up in My Bones by Charles M. Blow.

1. physiognomy – “Neither of us spoke, but physiognomic judgements passed between us, embedded in glares of disapproval.”

Physiognomy is the art of discovering temperament and character from outward appearance.

2. fluctuant – “Whatever I might feel about guys was subordinate and fluctuant, and I wanted to forever keep it bottled up tight, like the cork in a whiskey jug.”

Fluctuant has a couple different meanings.  In this case, I think the author meant variable or unstable.

Hi, I’m not well today. So, don’t stop by my place. I won’t be able to return the visits. Will be out for a while. Just quietly working on…..

Really like physiognomy. Have seen it but didn’t know what it meant.

Interesting words. Both new to me, as is the book they are from.

I think I already practice physiogomy. I just call it people watching. It started in college when I’d try to guess what students were majoring in. Now I like to guess what kind of jobs they do.

Both of these are excellent, new to me words. The book is also new to me!

I think to pronounce both of those words, one needs to keep the cork in the whiskey jug!

I figured “fluctuant” meant changing, like “fluctuate.” Physiognomy sounds cool. Thanks for sharing.

It’s a miracle! I knew both! I think I knew physiognomy from a historical fiction read!

I’m kind of fluctuant at time too…
