Review: Shopaholic to the Stars

January 27, 2015

Shopaholic to the Stars

When Becky Brandon and her family move to Los Angeles, she decides she wants to become a personal stylist for celebrities – after all, what could be more perfect than shopping for stars?  She wants her husband Luke to help her get to know his client, Sage Seymour, but he’ll have nothing to do with it, so she has to come up with a scheme of her own.  In typical Becky fashion, things don’t go the way she planned.

Shopaholic to the Stars is the seventh book in Sophie Kinsella‘s popular Shopaholic series.  The early books in the series charmed me.  Becky had a twisted sort of logic that somehow made sense.  I’m sad to say that I found this latest edition in the series to be flat and tired.  I didn’t enjoy Becky’s antics and overall found the book to be too silly for my tastes.

I listened to the audio version of Shopaholic to the Stars and I thought Clare Corbett did a marvelous job with the narration – her accents and voices are terrific and kept me invested in a book that I might have abandoned in print.  The audio is on 10 CDs and lasts approximately 12 and a half hours.

This sounds like such a fun read. I thought I’d read all the shopaholic books, but looks like I missed this one. Will get to it soon.

Another case when a good narrator saves a book. I don’t think I’ve had a chance to hear one of Corbett’s audios. I haven’t read this series but I know the books are quite popular. Thanks for telling us about it.

I’m four books behind in this series, but I’m finding that I am no longer interested in this series. It feels repetitive mostly. Maybe someday I will catch up.

Can you believe I never read any of her books? I guess I have no interest in shopping!

Sounds like a fun one! I listened to one of these books a while back.

I love these books – Becky is such an endearing character even though her antics are over the top! Thanks for including the audio sample – I don’t know the narrator but will look for her on other audiobooks (I already read this one in print)

I ‘ve not read a Kinsella for ages. This sounds just the book I need

I’ve never read any of these books, but will be sure to start at the beginning if I do.

Oh, too bad…I had become bored with Becky several books ago, but had hoped that the change in setting would spice things up. Thanks for sharing.

Ugh, sorry to hear that you didn’t like this one that much! I have loved the other books so I still may try this one!

I’m sorry this one wasn’t better, Kathy. I read three of the earlier books (I think it was three and not just two), and really enjoyed them. I could only take so much of Becky though.

I used to love these books but not any more…

I used to love these books as well. I liked them early on, but these later ones are tiresome…seems like Becky never changes…I have no idea how her husband puts up with her.

Kathy, thanks for sharing your honest thoughts about this audiobook (and series). I have not read (or listened to) any of the books in this series; I’m kind of afraid I might become too much of a shopaholic if I did!

  15. January 27, 2015 3:59 pm

I have read the others so I must read this one

I’ve only read the first Shopaholic book, which I enjoyed. I didn’t realize there are now seven books in the series! I can see how the theme might get a bit tired after a while.

I’m afraid I haven’t been paying attention. I have missed this series completely. The audio sounded good.

Awww too bad that the series didn’t hold up. I’ve read only one of these and thought it was fun.

Sounds like we felt the same about this one. I’m holding out hope that maybe the character will go in a different direction in future books.

I read the first of the series but Becky didn’t do it for me so I never continued. Getting to the 7th in a series is a big accomplishment but usually by that time there’s a dud or two in the mix.

Glad the narrator helped to salvage the story! Sorry to hear the series isn’t as enjoyable anymore.
