Review: Taking the Lead

November 18, 2014

Taking the Lead

One of my guilty pleasures is watching Dancing with the Stars so I decided to read Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life In Motion by one of the show’s stars, Derek Hough.   Hough writes a little about his background and shares how he came to be one of the dancers on DWTS.  At the end of each chapter, he shares “Leading Lessons,” bits of wisdom he’s learned from dancing and participating in DWTS.  There are also short pieces called “Reflecting on Derek” at the end of each chapter.  Written by friends, family members, and former partners, they’re very flattering and meant to show what a wonderful guy Hough is.

Taking the Lead was a quick read for me but I didn’t find it particularly revealing.  I thought it was a bit over-the-top at times – I’m sure Hough is a nice guy but this book makes him sound perfect.  The wisdom he shares is important but it’s nothing new or earth shattering.  I’ll admit that I enjoyed Taking the Lead but I’d only recommend it to fans of Hough and Dancing with the Stars.

I sort of hate watching DWTS because it makes me feel guilty for sitting on the couch all the time! :–)

My mother is addicted to DWTS… this would be perfect for her!

I’m also a big fan of DWTS (although, less so this season). And I really like Derek (have you seen him in Nashville? – he’s a very good actor). But I don’t think I care enough to devote time to his paean to himself. But I do think that some of these (auto)biographies are fun to read.

Oh I have a friend who loves that show — this would make a good gift, even if it isn’t all that revealing.

Can you believe I have never seen it at all? We don’t have cable anymore just Apple TV…I don’t how much I miss. Maybe that is a good thing?

I have never seen DWTS but I’ve seen Derek Hough on Nashville this season. Sounds like a fun read for his fans!

This sounds like it would be a fun, light read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it. I have only watched the show a couple of times.

    A perfect man…wouldn’t that be nice 🙂

I love reality tv and am addicted to many shows, but have never watched DWTS. I really don’t know why since I love dancing.

He is a handsome lad, though…

Dancing With the Stars is one of my not-so-secret tv obsessions. I just love the dancing! I’m not sure I want to read a book about Derek, he kind of annoys me, but I totally get the appeal 🙂

Oh I really like him on DWTS and LOVE him on Nashville (even though I’m a total Juliette/Avery fan). I wonder how many people will get it for the cover alone? 🙂

I didn’t know Derek wrote a book! DWTS is one of the few shows I watch every week.

I used to watch DWTS religiously and then there were a few seasons I didn’t like the casting sometime around when they starting using political people (Tom DeLay, Bristol Palin). Haven’t watched since.
Derek and his sister were the best choreographers and I liked them. Too bad the book seems a little bit like a press release.

I like watching DWTS. I didn’t know he had written a book. Yeah, one of these days I would like to hear some dirt about the guy. 🙂 He can’t be as a perfect as he comes off right?
