Wondrous Words Wednesday

October 22, 2014

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I found a couple words in The Lost Book of Mormon by Avi Steinberg.

1. craven – “‘We need you to take a more craven, conquered attitude.”

Craven means defeated or vanquished.

2. koan – “This struck me as a wise philosophy of life, a kind of koan.”

Koan is a paradox to be meditated upon that is used to train Zen Buddhists monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and to force them into gaining sudden intuitive enlightenment.

What words do you want to celebrate today?

Craven I sort of knew, but would not have given that definition. Koan was new to me. I try meditating, but it is difficult for me.

This one is interesting. I thought it meant cowardly. When I looked it up, it had both definitions. I feel vindicated! Of course, I had never heard of koan.

I thought I knew craven. I was thinking it came from the Bible, as in craven images. Turns out what I’m thinking about is graven images. My brain got a nice little workout this morning.

    Hmmm…I think I just read a book…where a Craven was a cross between a crow and a Raven! Lol!

Great words, Kathy! I thought I knew them, but I guess I did not.

Here’s yesterday’s new-to-me word from my word-a-day calendar: Rube Goldberg. It’s an adjective which means: accomplishing what seemingly could be done simply; also: characterized by such complex means. 🙂

I thought craven might mean crude or sinful – thanks for setting me straight!

  12. October 22, 2014 4:01 pm

    I am craven?

  13. October 22, 2014 4:02 pm

Koan is a new one for me too.

I thought I knew craven, but the definition is a little different that how I interpreted it. Interesting! Koan is a cool word.

Both are new to me! Isn’t it just amazing how many words we don’t know?
