Review: Sisters
Raina Telgemeier wanted a playmate and begged her parents for a sister. When she was five years old, her wish came true but things don’t work out the way she planned. She and Amara had different interests and don’t get along all that well. Of course, Rainia thought that it was all Amara’s fault. A family road trip made her realize she just might be part of the problem.
Sisters is Raina Telgemeier‘s latest graphic memoir and I thought it was terrific! It’s being promoted as the companion book to Smile, which I’ve never read but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of this book at all.
Telgemeier uses the backdrop of a family trip to tell the story of her relationship with her sister. Raina feels like Amara gets all the attention and listens to music through her Walkman to block out the rest of the world. They’re forced to pull together on a family trip making Raina realize she’s part of the problem.
The illustrations in this graphic memoir are terrific. I’m amazed at the emotion Telgemeir can convey with her wonderful drawings. The suggested age for this story of family dynamics is 8 to 12 but I think older kids will enjoy it and relate to it as well.
I will link this up to Booking Mama’s Saturday feature, Kid Konnection. If you’d like to participate in Kid Konnection and share a post about anything related to children’s books (picture, middle grade, or young adult) from the past week, leave a comment as well as a link on her site tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing your review. This sounds like one I should read!
I put this on my wish list a couple of months ago… sounds great!
Sounds like a cute book with life lessons to enjoy…thanks for sharing.
I love everything about this and will look for it 🙂
This sounds like a nice little graphic memoir 🙂
Sisters sounds like a terrific graphic memoir! 🙂 🙂
I liked this but not as much…
I always hated when they said what age level it was appropriate for , I like to read youth books, the author must tell the story in such a way as to keep the attention of the youthful reader, and I like that. Thank you for your thoughts.
Several people recommend this author when I posted about comic book recommendations. I’m glad you enjoyed this one!
I thought this was so delightful! You definitely don’t need to read Smile to follow this book. One of them will set the background and character familiarity by the time you are ready to read the other.
Sounds like a great book for sisters. I remember reading Smile with my kid long ago and Sisters looks like a charming follow up.
Both my girls have loved Telgemeier’s other books – Smile and Drama. Will definitely see if they’re interested in this one, though the 14yo might be getting a little old for them.
After reading Smile and the author’s fictional book, Drama, Sisters was a bit of a letdown for me because my expectations for it was so high. I’m glad you enjoyed it though.
I haven’t read any of her books yet but this one sounds really good.
My daughter has been begging for me to get this book. She has read the others in the series and loved them. I hate to pay for it though when I know she will have it read in an hour.
My daughter has read two of her books and loved both of them. I tried to get a copy of this one but was unsuccessful. She would have been surprised to see it. I will have to get it for her bday.
My daughter loved Smile, and this one looks cute, too.
I absolutely love this author/artist! Glad to hear this is a good one.
I’ve heard wonderful things about this one and am glad you enjoyed it, Kathy!
Looks like a great graphic memoir. I started one over the weekend. They are a nice change of pace.
This sounds like such a cute book! I think my granddaughter would love it!
Ha! Having two sisters I’m sure I can relate to this one. I’m glad my girls are sisters but it’s not always a picnic. 😉 Sounds like a lot of fun.
I’m a little late to the party here (just going through my reader!) – but my daughter ordered both of these books – SISTERS and SMILE – through Scholastic at school and loved them! She couldn’t put them down. (She’s in fifth grade). Glad you enjoyed it! -beth
