Wondrous Words Wednesday

August 6, 2014

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

All of this week’s words came from Pioneer Girl by Bich Minh Nguyen.

1. volute – “Sam leaned against the staircase, resting his arm where the staircase railing ended, curling into itself in a shape that I remembered was called volute.”

I thought the sentence did a good job of explaining this word but I looked it up anyway.  Volute means a spiral or scroll-shaped form.

2. lacuna – “What was wrong with me, that I didn’t register his absence, the permanent lacuna, which should have marked each day?”

Lacuna means blank space or missing part: gap.

3. liminal – “‘Liminal, academics call it'”

In this case, liminal means of, relating to, or being an intermediate state, phase, or condition: in-between, transitional.

I like these. Even though I couldn’t give a definition of any of them, they were all familiar and made sense when I saw what they meant.

Glad to know what “volute” means – never heard that one before. For some reason, I always think “lacuna” sounds like it should be a nice tropical vacation spot!

Haven’t heard these before, but when I saw the word lacuna, it made me think of laguna, which I’m very familiar with.

I love this feature. I just started reading a poetry collection that has me pausing with some frequency to look up words.

I didn’t know any of these. Do you narrow down your words or do you usually only find 2 or 3? I feel lately like I am overwhelmed by new words sometimes. Like I am studying for a vocab test. Not that it is a bad thing, I am learning. Just curious if it is just me!

I probably could have figured out the first word because of the sentence but the other two stumped me!
