Author event and giveaway: Sarah Addison Allen

March 6, 2014

Sarah Addison Allen

I’m rather embarrassed to admit that I’ve never read any of Sarah Addison Allen‘s books.  I know a lot of people who love her work, though, so it was a no brainer for me to go to her Book Your Lunch event and boy, am I glad I did!  Sarah is charming and delightful!

Sarah was lucky enough to be born and raised in Asheville and attended the University of North Carolina – Asheville.  Her father was a writer for the newspaper.

Sarah said she didn’t start writing seriously until she graduated from college and it took her twelve years to earn a living at it.  She wrote more than 20 books before Garden Spells.  It was her first book with magical realism.  That element was unintentional but she let the story go where it was going.  She said her writing even surprises her.  She describes her books as southern stories with romance and second chances with a touch of magical realism and says “I can’t write a book without a happy ending.”

It’s been four years since Sarah has done a book tour because she was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2011.  She spent a full year of treatment and finally had a clear scan.  She’s been in remission for two years now and says her life after cancer is a better one.  She says life is too short so we should all seek happiness.

Fans will be glad to know that a sequel to Garden Spells will be out soon.  In the meantime, everyone can enjoy Sarah’s latest book, Lost Lake.

The first time Eby Pim saw Lost Lake, it was on a picture postcard. Just an old photo and a few words on a small square of heavy stock, but when she saw it, she knew she was seeing her future.

That was half a life ago. Now Lost Lake is about to slip into Eby’s past. Her husband George is long passed. Most of her demanding extended family are gone. All that’s left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own unspoken dreams and desires.

It’s a lot, but not enough to keep Eby from relinquishing  Lost Lake to a developer with cash in hand, and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door.

Lost Lake is where Kate Pheris spent her last best summer at the age of twelve,  before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Now she’s all too familiar with those things, but she knows about hope too, thanks to her resilient daughter Devin, and her own willingness to start moving forward. Perhaps at Lost Lake her little girl can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer… and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago.

Lost LakeI got Sarah to autograph a copy of Lost Lake for one lucky reader.  To enter to win an autographed copy of LOST LAKE, simply fill out the entry form.  Contest is open worldwide – one entry per person, please.  I will use to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EDT Thursday, March 20, 2014.    Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.
