Kid Konnection: Recipe

December 7, 2013

Kristen tells her mom that she wants to learn to cook.  Her mom agrees so Kristen comes up with a recipe and gives her mom a grocery list with lots of silly items like a new puppy, a water squirter, horse meat substitute, and grape juice.  Her mom goes to the store and buys almost everything Kristen requests and they get to work.  The recipe doesn’t come out exactly the way Kristen plans, though, so they put it outside for the raccoons to enjoy, calling themselves “nature’s best human chefs.”

Recipe by Angela Petrella and Michaelanne Petrella is a silly book about independence and learning new things.  I liked the book but didn’t quite love it. I’m wondering if that’s because I didn’t have a little one to share it with, though.  I found Kristen a little too bossy –  she says, “I’m the boss when it’s my turn if I ask nicely” – and I found the recipe a little too silly.  Young readers probably wouldn’t feel that way though.

The illustrations by Mike Bertino and Erin Althea are nice and add to the silliness.  One thing I wasn’t crazy about was the smell of the book – I’m not sure if it’s the ink or the paper but I thought the book smelled odd.  I think the smell will probably diminish with repeated readings though.

I know it sounds like I didn’t like Recipe that much and that’s not the case at all.  I think it’s cute and fun but it’s not my favorite picture book.  I will be on the lookout for other books by these authors, though.

I hope they didn’t put the new puppy out for the raccoons!

I was curious when you mentioned the list of ingredients and then her mom picked up most of them….lol.

That list of ingredients might be hard to explain! And I have a sensitive nose – I’m sure the smell would irritate me.

Too bad it wasn’t a bigger hit with you.
