Wondrous Words Wednesday

November 20, 2013

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I only found one word last week and it was used several times in The Funeral Dress by Susan Gregg Gilmore.

1. chert – “She glanced at her feet, a full shade darker than her legs and tinged a pale red from walking through the chert covering the paths around her house.”

Chert is a rock resembling flint and consisting essentially of a large amount of fibrous chalcedony with smaller amounts of cryptocrystalline quartz and amorphous silica.  According to wikipedia, it varies greatly in color – obviously the chert in this book is of the red variety.

From the context of the sentence I thought chert might be some sort of plant. Good find Kathy.

These rocks are very pretty but I think it would be a bit disconcerting to look down and see that my feet were red!

Is this book set in the southwest? Sounds like a desert kind of rock. Thanks for teaching me something new!

Interesting! Sounds kind of painful to walk through the chert too. They are pretty though.

What about balderdash – which could be for a joke defined as a rapidly receding hairline! Cheers

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of chert but I feel like I should have.
