Review: My Own Miraculous

October 22, 2013

My Own Miraculous

Shandi Pierce is an unwed teenage mother.  She’s attending college and gets a lot of support from her mother and her best friend, Walcott.  She’s crazy about her son, Natty, who’s four now, but she’s more like a big sister than a mother to him.  When Shandi and Walcott go to give blood, they take Natty along with them, and something happens to make Shandi realize Natty has special abilities.  Someone else notices his abilities as well which makes Shandi realize it’s time for her to take charge and become his mother.

My Own Miraculous, by Joshilyn Jackson, is a short story prequel to her upcoming novel Someone Else’s Love Story and, boy, is it great!  I love Jackson’s work so was already excited about her new book, but now I’m even more excited!  I can’t wait to read it!

I was surprised at the amount of character development in this short story.  I adored Shandi and could feel for her.  She’s doing the best she can, which is actually pretty good.  Like most of us, though, she could do better, and when something happens to make her realize that, she steps up to the plate.

I really enjoyed the story line too and it has made me very excited for Someone Else’s Love Story.  I listened to the audio version of My Own Miraculous which is narrated by the author and her narration blew me away!  Now, I know why Sandy waits for the audio version of Jackson’s books!  The audio is about 2 hours and 15 minutes long and it is outstanding!

Seriously! I just stumbled into that narration awesomeness when I first started reading JJ, but now it is a hard cold promise to myself to NEVER read her books in print. I can’t even read the print then follow up with audio…it has to all happen in my ears because she is amazing and I don’t want that experience watered down. So this audio will be the next one I listen to after I finish with my current Mo Hayder. I’m still waiting (fidgeting actually) for my library to put the newest audio up on their website so I can be first in line.

I actually prefer this novella cover to the artwork for the upcoming novel. 🙂 I haven’t read anything by Joshilyn Jackson yet, but I’m off to check out her goodreads profile now. I’m glad this one impressed you! Shandi sounds like an interesting main character.

I somehow can’t concentrate while listening to audiobooks:( But this seems short enough for a successful attempt. I’m book marking both the short story and the book that’s going to come out. Looks interesting!

I’m listening to more audiobooks these days, so I’m glad I read this review. What a clever idea- to tease readers with a short story before the novel. I will have to read/ listen to this. Thanks for sharing!
