Author event and giveaway: Ruta Sepetys

October 1, 2013

Ruta Sepetys

Ruta Sepetys is such a dynamic speaker, it’s always a treat when she comes for an event.  A former Nashville music producer, Ruta felt compelled to tell the story of exiled Lithuanians a few years ago and wrote Between Shades of Gray.  That book has been published in 26 languages in 43 countries and is currently required reading in 26 states.

Ruta was inspired to write her second book, Out of the Easy, after she received vintage opera glasses as a gift.  The glasses were engraved with a name and came in the case of a New Orleans jeweler.  Ruta was curious about the original owner and learned that she was a madam in the French Quarter.  She was fascinated and started doing research.

With her passion for history, Ruta is committed to historical fiction.  She’s interested in feminism in a historical context.  She writes for young people because she feels the books we read as teens have the power to impact us and stay with us for the rest of our lives.  She feels rewarded if one person finds themselves in one of her books and says the reader’s interpretation is more important than the author’s intent.

I got Ruta to autograph a copy of Out of the Easy for one lucky reader.  To enter to win an autographed copy of OUT OF THE EASY, simply fill out the entry form.  Contest is open worldwide – one entry per person, please.  I will use to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EDT Monday, October 7, 2013.    Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

I love listening to her talk. Her trailer for Between Shades of Grey made me cry! I still have this one from SIBA last year. I have to make a point of getting it off my shelf and making it a priority.

My sister really liked Out of the Easy; I’m not sure if she’s read Between Shades of Grey yet, but I think she owns it. That’s great she was wonderful to listen too. I love author events like that.
