Review: The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop and Cafe

August 11, 2013

The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

As Ellen’s beloved grandmother is dying, she asks Ellen to deliver a letter to someone from her past.  Ellen is determined to hand deliver the letter and heads to Beacon, Maine to do just that.  She decides to take some pictures with the camera her fiancé recently gave her when the dock she’s standing on collapses and she almost drowns.  Luckily a local carpenter was close by to save her.  The event is big news in Beacon and everyone affectionately refers to Ellen as “the swimmer.”

As she hunts for the recipient of the letter, Ellen begins to discover things about her grandmother’s past she never knew.  What she learns also makes her question some choices she’s made in her own life.

The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop and Café, by Mary Simses, is a mouthful to say, but it was the perfect book for me at the time I read it.  Sure, it’s predictable, but that didn’t bother me one bit because I fell in love with the characters and the setting.  Beacon is full of quirky, kind characters who had me longing for life in a small New England town.  Ellen knows what she wants from life and was well on the way to achieving her goals – she’s a lawyer in a Manhattan law firm who’s about to marry the man of her dreams – but she begins to question her priorities.

The storyline is cute and entertaining.  There were a few twists and turns thrown in and I had to keep reading to make sure things turned out the way I wanted them to.  The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop and Café has a chick lit feel to it and will definitely appeal to those who enjoy that genre.  Pick it up when you’re looking for something fun!

It definitely has a tongue-twister title but also one that makes you want to find out what’s inside!

I can’t imagine there is anything but good when the title has “bakeshop” in it! I can’t read predictable and fluffy all the time, but now and again it is exactly what you need.

Predictable plots happen to be comforting at times, especially in chick lit. You want things to go right 🙂 That cover makes it look like a perfect weekend read!

I agree with Leslie. Light and fun is sometimes just the right thing. The fact that it’s set in Maine, my husband’s home state and where I lived for many years, is another attraction for me even though I rarely read a book like this.

I’ll be honest – I’m disappointed this wasn’t a cookbook! The picture on the cover looked scrumptious and I just love blueberries 🙂 It sounds like you enjoyed it though, so I might put it on my list for when I need a nice, light read.

I appreciate your review. It is wonderful when certain characteristics of a book, like predictability, can be overlooked because of the love for other characteristics in the book. Plus, timing is everything for me, and it sounds like you hit this one just right. I love the title and cover.
