Kid Konnection: Clementine and the Spring Trip

June 22, 2013

Clementine and the Spring Trip

Clementine is back and this time she’s celebrating Spring!  She’s excited because the apple tree she planted last fall has sprouted.   She’s coping with her friend Margaret’s spring cleaning, dealing with a new girl in her class, and worrying about the field trip to Plimouth Plantation.  Clementine’s third grade class will be going on the field trip with Margaret’s fourth grade class and Margaret informs Clementine that the fourth grade is strict about “silent eating.”  If that isn’t enough to worry about, Clementine’s mom is having a baby and Clementine’s trying to decide if it would be better if the baby is a boy or a girl.

Clementine and the Spring Trip is the sixth book in the delightful Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker.  There’s a lot going on in this book, but Pennypacker does a wonderful job weaving all the storylines together so it’s easy to keep up with everything.  The bulk of the story is about the field trip, though – the third graders despair when they see that they’ll be on Bus Seven, otherwise none as “The Cloud” because of its smell.  Clementine despairs because she’s been paired with Olive, the new girl whose popularity bothers Clementine.

Clementine does her best to get out of the field trip but finds she can’t avoid it.  Things work out just fine, though – Clementine finds that she actually likes Olive, discovers the source of Bus Seven’s odor, and meets a chicken that makes her think about what she eats.

Early readers, especially girls, will really enjoy this chapter book.  They’ll be able to relate to the ever delightful Clementine and will adore the wonderful illustrations by Marla Frazee.  If this is their first experience with Clementine, they’ll want to go back and read the other five books in the series.  If you know any young readers, you’ll want to check this series out!

I love all the kids series books out now. I only had Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew. I would be in hog heaven if I were growing up now!

This sounds adorable. I’ve seen the series but my daughter is way past this stage, but I know she would have enjoyed them.
