Kid Konnection: Bananas in My Ears

April 27, 2013

Bananas in My Ears

If you’re looking for a book to introduce young readers to poetry, you couldn’t go wrong with Bananas in My Ears by Michael Rosen.  With a subtitle of A Collection of Nonsense Stories, Poems, Riddles & Rhymes you just know this is going to be a silly book!  At times it was too silly for me, but I think it will tickle the funny bone of 6 to 9 year olds.

Divided into 4 “books,” Bananas in My Ears explores breakfast, the seaside, the doctor, and bedtime – things most kids can relate to.  The illustrations by Quentin Blake have a soft washed look to them that I found very appealing.  I appreciated that most of the poems don’t rhyme, introducing young readers to the concept of a story told in verse.  Here’s a poem that I particularly enjoyed:

After Dark

Outside after dark,
trains hum and traffic lights wink,
after dark, after dark.

In here after dark,
curtains shake and closets creak,
after dark, after dark.

Under the covers after dark,
I twiddle my toes and hug my pillow,
after dark, after dark.

If you know a youngster who likes to be silly, be sure to check out this book!

Sounds cute. The title reminds me of the sound, “My mother said not to put beans in my ears….”
