Kid Konnection: Make Magic! Do Good!

April 13, 2013

Make Magic! Do Good!

Make Magic! Do Good! is a wonderful book of poetry for early elementary schoolers by Dallas Clayton.  Parents will appreciate the positive messages of believing in yourself and doing the right thing that these poems convey.  Kids will love the rhyme and rhythm of the poems and may even enjoy the illustrations, even though I found them rather simplistic.  That didn’t keep me from loving this book!  It’s sweet and encourages kids to do the right thing.  Here’s one of my favorite poems:

Take what you need
just enough for yourself
otherwise you’re taking from someone else.
And how much fun
can it really be
when they’ve got none
and you’ve got three?

Isn’t that a message many adults could use as well?  Here’s another great poem:

When you’re running fast as lightning
it’s easy to lose your mind
it’s easy to laugh at all the folks
that you’re passing and leavin’ behind
but you won’t be fast forever
so the clever thing to do
is to stop and help the others keep up
because someday
they’ll be you.

If you’re looking for a book to introduce young readers to poetry, I strongly suggest Make Magic! Do Good! I had a smile on my face the whole time I read this gem of a book.

I don’t know if anybody can beat Shel Silverstein for kids’ poetry!
