Kid Konnection: World Rat Day

April 6, 2013

World Rat Day

Children’s Poet Laureate J. Patrick Lewis takes on obscure holidays in World Rat Day, a book of fun poems for young readers.  The poems in this book celebrate everything from Cow Appreciation Day to Yell “Fudge!” at the Cobras in North America Day.  Most of the poems are clever but many of the targeted audience of 5 to 8 year olds will need help understanding some of them.  Take, for example, the poem for June 14, National Skunk Day:

If the skunk did not exist,

Then the skunk would not be mist.

The poem for October 26, World Mule Day is entitled Jack A. and may offend some parents.  I found the poems in this book to be somewhat uneven but thoroughly enjoyed all of the beautiful illustrations by Anna Raff.  If you want to discover some new holidays to celebrate with youngsters, you may want to check this book out.

That’s the trouble with collections of poems, I think, like collections of short stories. Some are great, some are meh.

Do we really have holidays for animals? They must be obscure like you said because I’ve never heard of them.

I think every collection has a few that aren’t “winners.”

Funny–and unique–premise for a book of poetry! I had no idea there’s a National Skunk Day, or a Cow Appreciation Day!
