Review: The Last Girlfriend on Earth

March 1, 2013

The Last Girlfriend on Earth

The Last Girlfriend on Earth, by Simon Rich, is a collection of short stories all about love and, boy, are they fun!  I really enjoyed Rich’s lighthearted, humorous writing and started laughing with the very first story.

The stories in this collection have to be some of the most unique I’ve ever read.  The first story, Unprotected, is told from the point of view of a condom in a teen boy’s wallet.   Another story features cavemen and Greek gods are in yet another.  Most of the stories are only a few pages, so this is a great book for the car or your purse – you could read a story while standing in line or sitting at a stoplight.

I thought The Last Girlfriend on Earth was delightful!  I found it to be clever and funny and was charmed by Rich’s writing.  I didn’t want to put it down and couldn’t wait to pick it back up.  It’s the perfect book to grab when you’re looking for an amusing read.

I’m not usually a fan of short stories, but lately I’ve been drawn to a couple books that I’ve wanted to read that are (short stories), and now you have me intrigued by another one.

Some of these stories do sound unusual and fun, and I would love to take the chance with this book. I particularly like that they are short enough to dip in and out of.

I just finished a short story collection as well. Two of them as a matter of fact. I have come to appreciate the short story form and love when a collection surprises me.
