Wondrous Words Wednesday

December 12, 2012

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!   If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky!

I found several words in Dare Me by Megan Abbott.

1. pule – “I can’t do it,” she pules to Beth and me.”

Pule means to whine or whimper.  I wish I’d known this word when Vance was younger!

2. thew – “I hold onto her shoulders, their tensile thew rocking in my hands.”

Since I use thew fairly often in Words with Friends, I thought I should finally look it up.  Thew means muscular power or development.

3. brisk – “It’s fine,” Coach says, brisking by me with a knowing face.”

I’m not sure why I didn’t figure this one out!  I knew brisk but had never seen it used this way.  In this case, brisk means energetic or quick.

I have a friend writing a book set in a “Pirates of the Carribean” type atmosphere. I think “thew” would work well there- never heard of it! Sounds very antiquated. Same for pule. Can’t wait to use that one on my kids…

I’d never heard “thew” before — except that my little nephew always used it as the past tense of throw (“I thew the ball, Aunt Joy!”) Also never heard “brisk” used in that way — but I’ll definitely be using it now.

I like pule. I’m going to try to use it instead of whining. When I say the word “whining” it always comes out with a whining sound. I wonder if pule will eventually do the same.
