Review: Mulholland Dive

November 29, 2012

Mulholland Dive, by Michael Connelly is a collection of three short stories.   I enjoyed each of the stories in this collection but found the title story to be the most entertaining.  The three stories are:

  • In Cahoots – A poker player regales his opponents with the story of a great heist in order to distract them from what he’s really doing.
  • Mulholland Dive – A wealthy celebrity who is in the process of divorce is in a fatal accident on Mulholland Drive.  A police detective or “reconstructionist” is trying to determine exactly what happened.  There’s a lot riding on his findings since the celebrity is still technically married.  The outcome of this one is rather surprising.
  • Two Bagger – When a meth dealer is let out of jail, he’s tailed by two cops.  He enjoyed protection from a tough gang while he was incarcerated and the cops figure he’s going to have to pay them back somehow and they want to know how and when.

I listened to the audio version of Mulholland Dive and it’s capably narrated by David Collins.  I enjoyed the stories and his narration.  The audio lasts about two hours so it’s the perfect choice to listen to when running errands or exercising.

I realized this year that I am not a fan of short stories, but I have several books that contain short stories that I want to read. This sounds like the perfect in-between book. You know, when you can’t decide what to read next.

Makes me think of the movie Mulholland Dr. which involved a car crash too. (I think.) Glad you enjoyed this one!

I like Michael Connelly and will look forward to reading this one. BTW would love to see more Lincoln Lawyer movies with Matthew McConnaughay.

I really liked the story Two Bagger, was my favorite of the collection. Have you listened to The Safe Man. It’s a short novella by Connelly, about an hour and a half, and also narrated by Collins.

I usually avoid short stories, but you’re right, this sounds perfect for the car! Although, I have finally started to weed out certain books. I just never knowwhat Gage is going to repeat!
