Kid Konnection: Zephyr Takes Flight

June 23, 2012

Young Zephyr loves airplanes so much, they’re all she can think about.  She plays with them every chance she gets but what she really wants is to fly one some day.  When she’s sent to her room one day, she finds a door behind her dresser that leads to a magical place filled with maps and flying machines.  She takes one of the flying machines out for a spin and, after she has engine trouble, lands in a place where all the pigs, except one, can fly.  She helps that little pig, then all the pigs help her and she manages to get back home.

Zephyr Takes Flight, written and illustrated by Steve Light, is a cute little picture book that shows the value of imagination.  The story is sweet and not all that different from other stories you’ve read, but there are a few things that stood out for me.  The illustrations are just fantastic – I could admire them all day.  I also love that they feature Zephyr’s parents doing non-traditional household chores – her dad is cooking while her mom is repairing a stool.  I appreciate the way her parents accept her fascination with airplanes until she takes things too far.

I think pre-readers, especially those interested in airplanes and flying will enjoy this book.  Here’s a peek at an inside page spread:

Those are great illustrations. I like that the main character is a girl who likes planes – usually it’s boys in books about vehicles.

This sounds like a book I would totally love. I love the fantasy aspects and the non-traditional role aspects (hopefully not also fantasy – LOL)
