Wondrous Words Wednesday

April 4, 2012

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. If you want to play along, grab the button, write a post and come back and add your link to Mr. Linky! It’s a good thing I have a Word-a-Day calendar because I had to rely on it again this week.

1. haptic – “Katy could tell one kind of yarn from another purely by haptic clues.”

In this case, haptic means relating to or based on the sense of touch.

2. spume – “The sea spray and spume from the rising tide made the rocks along the beach slick and treacherous.”

I feel like I should have known this one.  Spume means frothy matter on liquids: foam or scum.

3. palmary– “Olympic athletes are regarded as the palmary representatives of their sport.”

Palmary is an adjective that means outstanding or best.

Have you come across any new words lately?

I can’t believe I’m first! I had dozed off and woke up in front of the tv about 1am California time. Since my husband and son are both working nights this week I checked my phone and saw your tweet! This and Snapshot Saturday are the palmary memes, imho!
    Sweet Dreams.

I’ve only seen two of these but already I’m looking forward to next week’s words. Your blog is the palmery representative of the vocabulary (did I use that correctly?)

You ALWAYS come up with the best words. I didn’t know palmary and couldn’t begin to guess its meaning. It’s not even in my online dictionary!

I knew spume. It’s the name for the spray when whales surface and exhale, A very exciting sight! The other two are new for me too. Palmary effort.

I knew spume too, but not in this sense!
@ BermudaOnion: haptic is interesting, but I don’t think I can find a way to use it.

Spume reminds me of another word that I think means something similar and sounds sort of the same – only I can’t think of what that word is!

As a lover of yarn and fabric I’m going to adopt haptic. Tell your word-a-day calendar thank you. And, thanks to you too for faithfully hanging in with Wondrous Words. You know, we passed the three year mark weeks ago. I love it as it’s made me more alert in my reading.

New words for me again this week. And I felt so smart last week actually knowing a few of the words!

  20. April 4, 2012 1:48 pm

The only one I knew there was “spume” and I think that’s only because I grew up on the coast, and there are a lot of sea related terms I learned that I don’t think I’d know otherwise.

  21. April 4, 2012 1:51 pm

Spume was familiar to me but I didn’t know the other 2. Haptic is great, I really this word.
