Kid Konnection – Big Nate: In a Class by Himself

February 4, 2012

Nate Wright has quite an ego, but you can’t help but relate to him in some way.  He just knows he’s going to excel at something, but hasn’t figured out what yet.  When he gets a fortune cookie that says “Today you will surpass all others,” he knows it’s going to be his best day ever.  As he proceeds through the school day, he comes up with all kinds of ways to surpass others and eventually he does, but not in the way he expected.

Big Nate: In a Class by Himself by Lincoln Peirce is the first of the Big Nate chapter books and it is delightful!  It’s told in graphic novel form so it’s a quick read and will appeal to both reluctant and eager readers.  Nate is hilarious and always makes me laugh out loud.  I think he’s a fabulous character but I’m glad Vance was nothing like him.  He thinks very highly of himself and always blames others when things don’t go right.  The thing is, he really wants to be good and can’t understand why his schemes backfire on him.   I think most kids will be able to relate to Nate in some way – many of his ideas make sense in a twisted sort of way – and will laugh at his antics.

This series flies off the shelves of my library! Almost as popular as Diary of a Wimpy Kid…

This book is huge at my middle school right now. I can not keep them on the shelves. It’s a great one to go to after they’ve devoured the Wimpy Kid books!!

I”m thinking this might be a good follow-up now that we’ve read all the Wimpy Kid books.

The Girl loves the Big Nate books. We bought her the newest one for Christmas, but she hasn’t read it yet. They do look fun!
